Hello, blog family! I'm so glad you stopped by for today's author interview and giveaway! I'm featuring the lovely Johnnie Alexander and her book "Where Treasure Hides" today. Isn't the cover exquisite?

Let's get this interview started! :)


Tell us a bit about yourself and your writing. (How did you get started? How many books have you written? Where are you on your writing journey?)

I think I’ve wanted to write since I took my first breath, but I lacked the confidence to do more than dabble for way too long. One of my first major milestones occurred when I participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo.org) in 2003.

I discovered how much I loved creating characters and the thrill of having characters do things I never expected. I was hooked, but several more years passed before I did much more than dream of someday being published.

Another milestone was attending the 2007 Florida Christian Writers Conference. I made lasting friendships, learned about craft, and knew I had to keep trying.

Then in 2011, I won the American Christian Fiction Writers Genesis Contest in the historical category. That manuscript, Where Treasure Hides, became my debut novel. Tyndale released the ebook in 2013 and the print edition a few weeks ago.

Where She Belongs (Misty Willow Series), the first of three contemporary romances, releases from Revell in January. My historical novella, tentatively titled The Healing Promise, will be included in Barbour’s Courageous Brides Collection which releases next July.


What is your favorite Bible verse?

I have more than one so it’s always hard to answer a question like this. I’ll go with one that’s a little more obscure: Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun (Ecclesiastes 11:7).

I love the poetry and imagery of that Scripture.


What have you read lately that you would recommend?    

I’ve read two of Ann Tatlock’s novels in recent weeks that were almost impossible to put down: Once Beyond a Time and I’ll Watch the Moon. Ann has a lyrical and gifted voice, and her characters pull you into the story.


What book are you featuring today?

Where Treasure Hides is about a talented artist who protects art and children from the Nazis while the man she loves must fight his own battles against Hitler’s evil regime.


Dutch-American artist Alison Schuyler lives in Rotterdam, Holland with her grandfather who owns the family’s art gallery. While in London, she meets British Army officer Ian Devlin after he protects a Kindertransport boy at Waterloo Station and she draws a sketch of the two of them.


Though the attraction between them is instant, Europe is on the edge of war. August 1939 is not a good time for romance. Circumstances bring them back together but Ian is recalled to duty when England declares war on Germany.

Alison assists her family in protecting Dutch art from the Nazi looters while Ian is wounded and captured at Dunkirk. She’s almost glad he’s a POW—at least he’s out of the war. But Ian chafes under the confinement and eventually escapes.


As the story unfolds, Alison and Ian are reunited then torn apart again. Will they ever find the happiness that eludes them? You’ll have to read the story to find out!


If you could tell people who are going to read/have read your books one thing, what would it be?

In the story, my heroine’s go-to Scripture is Proverbs 31:25 which, in the KJV, reads: “Strength and honour are her clothing, and she shall rejoice in time to come.”

Alison faced an unlikely trial and a difficult loss. But by holding onto this promise, she could rejoice in the blessings God had given her even as she mourned all that the war had taken from her.

This is also one of my favorite verses, though I prefer the NASB version: “Strength and dignity are her clothing and she smiles at the future.”

As daughters of the King of Kings, we can clothe ourselves in strength and dignity no matter what difficulties we are facing. Even in sorrow, joy can be ours as we claim the promise of an eternal future with our Savior.

It took me a chapter or two to get into this book, but once I did, I truly enjoyed this unique take on finding your calling and doing what you were meant to do.

We chase our dreams when we are young, only to “settle” for the safer option as we grow older or fail so epically that we can’t bear to try again. When did work become work? What if it could be a calling? You'll find the answers to these questions and more in the pages of this book.

Full of true stories, thought-provoking quotes, and ideas, this book will make you reconsider everything you’ve ever thought about work and success. Finding your calling isn’t just for the lucky few. It can be for everyone.

My Thoughts:

​I waited way too long to read the third installment of the Gabby St. Claire mysteries after reading the first two (I'm talking years here), so it took me a little while to refresh my memory. But I'm so glad I picked up this book... It was the same snarky humor, crazy situations, and emotionally-deep moments that made me fall in love with the first two!

It's been fun to watch Gabby grow and deepen as a character... Following her as she deals with learning how to forgive her father and herself for things that happened in the past was thought-provoking, to say the least. It definitely stepped on my toes, but in a good way. :)

Gabby's and Riley's romance was delightful, too. I can't wait to see what happens next in their story.

Let's get this interview started!


Tell us a bit about yourself and your writing.

I enjoy spending time with my husband and our three children. My favorite pastime is grabbing a cup of coffee, eating chocolate, and reading a good book. I’m a member of American Christian Fiction Writers, Word Weavers International, and I love writing contemporary and historical romance novels.

How did you get started?

Actually, I believe God called me to write because I never wanted to. Never thought about writing until I asked God what He wanted me to do with my life. I remember saying, with ready fingers on the keyboard, “Are you sure, God?” I had no idea what I was doing at the time, but I had a burden to share the story God had placed on my heart.

Where are you on your journey?

I’m not sure. Really, only God knows. But there are two things that I do know. The first is that God is molding me to be the person He’s called me to be through this writing journey. Second, God is using me for His glory, that every word I write, every time I get into my character’s head, describe a scene, etc., I’m pointing people to Christ. I’m showing His unconditional love and redemption for His children.

What is your favorite Bible verse?


I’d have to say Philippians 4: 6-7. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

What have you read lately that you would recommend?


As of right now, I’m not reading anything due to my fast approaching deadline for my current work in progress Restored. However, the first few books on my reading pile are from Mary Connealy’s series Wild at Heart. Once I finish my Unending Love series, I’ll be snuggling up in a chair with one of Mary’s books. =)

What book are you featuring today?


Today I’m featuring my contemporary romance novel Unconditional, the first book in the Unending Love series. Unconditional is a story of a husband and wife who struggle with disappointment and heartache and ask if marriage is worth fighting for. But it’s also a story of how God’s grace can lead to healing beyond the imagination because with God, nothing is impossible.

Prologue


“Please, Elizabeth...I can’t lose you.” Chris Roberts gently kissed his wife’s hand. He focused on her bandaged head and breathing tube, looking for any sign she heard his pleas, felt his touch. Nothing.

“Your daughter needs you. I need you.” His voice faded into the quietness of the room. He wiped his cheek with the back of his hand and tried to force his mind clear. The image of his pregnant wife slipping from the church steps still haunted him. He should have been closer, should have caught her.

The doctor and nurse came into the room, but he barely acknowledged them as they checked his wife’s vitals and changed her bandage. There was nothing more they could do.

“Mr. Roberts,” the doctor spoke from Elizabeth’s bedside. “There’s been no change, but the wound to her head is healing nicely.”

“It’s been two weeks. Will she ever come out of this coma?”

“I don’t know. All we can do is wait and pray. But I thought you should know about your daughter.”

Chris met his gaze. “Katherine. Is she all right?”

The doctor’s eyes softened. “Her breathing is still our main concern since her lungs weren’t fully developed, but she is doing better than we expected. What I’m trying to say is she’s thriving and should be able to go home within the week.”

Chris tried to smile but failed. Katherine had survived the terrible incident, but what about Elizabeth? He turned back to his wife and squeezed her hand. “Did you hear the doctor? Katherine’s doing well. We can go home soon, but you have to wake up.” He bowed his head and fought against his tears. The door clicking closed behind him echoed in the room.

The days passed in slow motion — the next day, and the next — all blending together into one long vigil, one long prayer that never seemed to go farther than the ceiling. Where was God? Was he even listening?

Doubts preyed on Chris as he entered Elizabeth’s room and found his brother standing at Elizabeth’s bed. Phillip’s eyes were closed, head bowed. He held Elizabeth’s limp hands in his. He spoke in soft whispers, and though Chris couldn’t make out his words, his brother’s expression suggested he was pleading to God in prayer.

What good would it do? Another week had passed, and still his wife lay unconscious. Three weeks, and Elizabeth’s condition hadn’t changed. The window to her recovery was quickly closing. He’d never in his life felt so helpless.

After several minutes, Chris touched his brother’s shoulder. “Phillip.”

Phillip whirled to face him. “She squeezed my hand. It was soft, but I felt it. I think she’s waking up.”

Chris went to Elizabeth’s side and searched her features, her eyes, as he’d done many times before for any sign she’d come back to him. A vise tightened around his heart. False hope, yet again.

He fought the desire to sink into a chair and sob, but instead collected her hands within his. A small moan escaped her lips.

Chris’s breath caught. “Oh, Elizabeth. I’m here. Look at me.”

“I’ll get the doctor!” Phillip rushed from the room.

Chris touched her forehead where the bandage had once been and smoothed down her hair. “Open your eyes.” He ached for her touch, for her smile, for her love. “Sweetheart, I’m here. I love you.”

Slowly, surely, Elizabeth’s eyes fluttered open. Tears filled his own eyes.

The doctor burst into the room with a nurse on his heels. Even while they examined Elizabeth, he refused to leave her side. She squinted and blinked twice. A frown touched her brow as she gazed around the room, then at him.

He smiled down at her, joy filling his heart. His wife was alive. “Katherine’s home. We’ve been waiting for you.”

Elizabeth licked her lips, her gaze never leaving his. “I’m sorry…” she paused. “Who is Katherine? Who are you?”


If you could tell people who are going to read/have read your books one thing, what would it be?


It’s so hard to come up with just one thing! =) But I would have to say as people read my stories, I hope they will know that God’s love for them is unshakable no matter the circumstances. I love what Isaiah 54:10 says, “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken.” This is a promise from the Lord and a theme you’ll find in every novel I write.

Hello, everybody! We have an old friend back with us today. Dawn Crandall is celebrating the release of her Everstone Chronicles books in paperback this year! Let's get this interview started!


Tell us a bit about yourself and your writing. (How did you get started? How many books have you written? Where are you on your writing journey?)

I'm married and live in north eastern Indiana. I have three cats and a baby boy. And I have ADD. 

I started writing The Hesitant Heiress in January of 2010. I'd never written much, but I knew I would someday write a novel. It ultimately took my husband finding out about it to get me to actually do it. He encouraged me to stay home and write, so I finally did. In 2011, I went to my first American Christian Fiction Writers conference and signed with my literary agent, Joyce Hart, about a month later. I'd only just barely finished The Hesitant Heiress at that point. The year after that, while my one and only proposal made the rounds with publishers, I wrote The Bound Heart, which semi-finaled in the 2012 ACFW Genesis Contest. The next year after that, my proposal was still actively in submission, but because my agent believed it would eventually sell, I started the third book in the series, The Captive Imposter. I quickly wrote the rough draft (which I don't usually do) so I could enter it into the 2013 ACFW Genesis Contest. The Captive Imposter and The Hesitant Heiress both semi-finaled that year, and The Captive Imposter ended up finaling in the Romantic Suspense category. Soon after that, I received my three book contract from Whitaker House--one that would have my series release rather quickly (since the series was almost completely written) every three months as as eBooks... and then later as paperbacks... which is happening this fall. It's been a crazy year, plus I had my first baby during all this! All three books released within the first year of his life! 

So far, these three books in The Everstone Chronicles series are the only three books I've written. I have a fourth novel out on submission with my literary agent, and it's all ready to be fully written once I get the go ahead. 

Right now, it's been 13 months since The Hesitant Heiress debuted, and it has fortunately been a great success! It has won two awards through chapters of Romance Writers of America, 2015 The Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence and the 2015 Write Touch Readers' Award. And it is currently a 2015 ACFW Carol Award Finalist! It was also announced last week that The Bound Heart has won an award as well, the 2015 Laurel Award from Clash of the Titles! 

Even though I now have an 18 month old baby boy... I am still committed to writing. I just have to do it a little differently now that my first and only three manuscripts have been published! Now it's all about pitching ideas and seeing if any publisher is interested in publishing them.             


What is your favorite Bible verse?

I have too many favorites! This is just one of them, and one that I try to live out every day.

Phil. 4:8 – “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Hey, everybody! I hope you're having a wonderfully blessed week! I'm thrilled to introduce Bonnie Leon and her new book to you today. (Isn't the cover beautiful!?) Let's get this interview started!


Tell us a bit about yourself and your writing. (How did you get started? How many books have you written? Where are you on your writing journey?)

I’m not one of those writers who always wanted to write. I was nearly forty when the writing bug bit me. In 1990 I felt compelled to write short stories, personal experiences and poems and filled legal pads with my ideas. In May of 1991 I attended my first writing workshop. One of the visiting authors told me I had a unique writing voice and she encouraged me to keep writing. I floated home imagining my soon to come writing career.

The dream was short-lived. Less than a month later my life was altered when the van I was driving was hit by an overturned log truck. I was left with permanent injuries to my spine and with chronic pain. After months of medical testing, evaluation, and physical therapy I was told I’d never fully recover and would not be able to work.

I wallowed in a pit of despair, and then God rescued me and set me on a path of writing. I wrote my first novel in 1992 and it released in 1994. I’ve been writing ever since. Thus far I’ve written twenty-one novels and hope to write many more.


What is your favorite Bible verse?

A favorite Bible verse is like choosing one of my favorite children or grandchildren – impossible. The Bible is alive, a gift from God to humankind. Today a special verse that lifts me up is Isaiah 55: 8, 9. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

It reassures me that even when I don’t “get it” God does. He has a greater plan than even I can imagine.



What have you read lately that you would recommend?


I’ve been reading the Lynn Austen series “Refiners Fire”. I’m half way through book three and have thoroughly enjoyed the series, which takes place during the Civil War. She’s a fabulous writer.



What book are you featuring today?

To Dance With Dolphins is my first contemporary novel. It is a story that has been resting in my heart for many years. I’m thrilled to introduce it to readers. The characters and the tale are real to me.
