Author Mini-view:

Hello, blog friends! This week, I'm featuring the lovely Carole Brown and her book "With Music In Their Hearts." Let's get this interview started!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your writing. How did you get started?

I began writing as early as my elementary years, beginning with a caveman’s journal of a week in his life. That, and a steady diet of books--particularly mysteries and suspense, created a desire to write. Once I realized God had given me a special talent, and decided to pursue authorship, I never looked back. What a blessing it’s been.

How many books have you written?

I just released my fourth novel in August 2015: the second book in my Denton and Alex Davies mysteries, called: Bat Crazy. These are fun and lighthearted books about an early-retired couple who travel in their RV with their pet dog, Taffy, and end of right in the midst of a mystery plot. It can be found on my Amazon page.
Late November of this year, Sabotaged Christmas, the first book of the Appleton, WV romantic mysteries, will release. The Italian owner of the DeLuca Construction company is faced with sudden doubts about her late father’s honesty. Combine that with the threats to her business, she wonders if the new man in town--a history professor/author, Perrin Douglas--is behind it all. Pink notes, blue eyes, and a secret history and will has Toni DeLuca wondering who in Appleton, WV she can trust. Certainly not Perrin.
Next year, I’m looking forward to releasing THREE books. So excited.

Where are you in your writing journey?

Now that I can modestly say I’ve seen four of my novels published, with the fifth releasing next month, I feel I can say I’ve learned a lot in the last two years. It’s been a busy, crazy few months, but I’ve loved it. I’ve developed a nice pattern for me, in what works and what doesn’t; I’m comfortable and happy in the genre that fits me. I have two great critique partners, wonderful editors, and developed my own personal style of writing that fits.
I’m looking forward to working on my next novels for my readers.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

My favorite chapter is found in Psalm 91. I love the assurances of God that he will fight for me, be strong for me, and help me to be so too. I love how he comforts and the promises he makes to those who trust in him.

What have you read lately that you would recommend?

There are so many I love! Tamera Kraft’s A Soldier’s Heart is a wonderful historical novel. Linda Rondeau is an experienced and prolific author. Do check out her novels on her Amazon author page. Mary Ellis’s book, Mississippi Nights is a great suspense novel. The way I hear it, it’s her first suspense, although she’s quite talented in writing Amish and historical novels.

What book are you featuring today?

With Music in Their Hearts is the first book in my WWII Spies suspense series. It’s a heartwarming novel of the eldest of three red-headed sisters. Here’s the blurb:

Angry at being rejected for military service, Minister Tyrell Walker accepts the call to serve as a civilian spy within his own country. Across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio, a spy working for a foreign country is stealing secret plans for newly developed ammunition to be used in the war. According to his FBI cousin, this spy favors pink stationery giving strong indications that a woman is involved.

He’s instructed to obtain a room in the Rayner Boarding House run by the lovely, spunky red-haired Emma Jaine Rayner. Sparks of jealousy and love fly between them immediately even as they battle suspicions that one or the other is not on the up and up.

While Tyrell searches for the murdering spy who reaches even into the boarding home, Emma Jaine struggles with an annoying renter, a worried father (who could be involved in this spy thing), and two younger sisters who are very different but just as strong willed as she is.

As Tyrell works to keep his double life a secret and locate the traitor, he refuses to believe that Emma Jaine could be involved even when he sees a red-haired woman in the arms of another man. Could the handsome and svelte banker who’s also determined to win Emma Jaine’s hand for marriage, be the dangerous man he’s looking for? Is the trouble-making renter who hassles Emma Jaine serving as a flunky? Worse, is Papa Rayner so worried about his finances and keeping his girls in the style they’re used to, that he’ll stoop to espionage?

Will their love survive the danger and personal issues that arise to hinder the path of true love?

A Flute in the Willows is scheduled for release in the spring of 2016. It’s the second book in this series and features Josie Rayner Patterson, the rebel of the sisters and a serious hopeful for the Figure Skating Olympics--if the war ever ends. She and her heartthrob of a husband join together to stop a German Spy from destroying . . . Like I said, the book will be out soon! Look for it. ☺

If you could tell people who are going to read/have read your books one thing, what would it be?

My books are filled with romance, hope, real life issues, a bit of whimsy and sometimes comedy, but always suspense. Whether light touches of inspiration or heavier ones, they are uplifting and inspiring always. Faith in God and hope for eternity and downright enjoyment for a few hours of relaxation will hopefully have you waiting for another Brown novel. Feel free to check out my books on Amazon, and do follow me on any of my social links. If you’re interested in hearing early on and now and then about new novels releasing, do let me know. Thanks so much for reading. Love new friends.

Book Blurb:

RACE AGAINST TIME

The last thing Krista Curry expected to find in a soccer stadium was a time bomb. When she alerts explosives expert Cash Dixon, she becomes a local hero. But the attention could expose her real name—and the infamous past she fought to escape. Cash promises Krista protection from the bomber's retaliation. Yet she hesitates to trust him as she sees his suspicion about her grow with every question she dodges. She can't expect Cash to continue to safeguard her unless she tells him the truth. Now Cash must decide if she's an innocent woman or guilty accomplice. But the clock is ticking down—and the real bomber is still on the loose…

First Responders: Brave men and women alert and ready for danger and love.

My Thoughts:

Explosive Alliance is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last. I really enjoyed this inspirational romantic suspense story.

Cash and Krista are great characters, flawed yet lovable. I really enjoyed Opa and Krista's relationship. It brought a sweetness to the suspense. I also liked the family atmosphere of the First Responders Team. I can see how all of them will have unique stories to tell. (And can’t wait!)

I loved the twist at the end that answered all of the questions. I won't say any more, but the end is worth it! :)

I'm giving this great read 4 stars. Looking forward to the next installment!

(I received an e-copy of this book from Harlequin and Netgalley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review, which I have given.)

Author Mini-view and Giveaway:  Alicia G. Ruggieri and "All Our Empty Places"

Author Mini-view:

Hello, lovely blog readers! Today I'm featuring the lovely Alicia G. Ruggieri on my blog and I couldn't be more thrilled. After falling in love with her book "The Fragrance of Geraniums" earlier this year, my copy of "All Our Empty Places" has been taunting me from my bookshelf. (You can find my review of "The Fragrance of Geraniums" here.)

Anyhoo, let's get this mini-view started!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your writing. (How did you get started? How many books have you written? Where are you on your writing journey?)

I’m a follower of the Lord Jesus who lives in New England, near its craggy coast. I’m also blessed to be the wife of an Italian-Frenchman and the mama of a “second-hand” pug with an extremely troubled soul.

I began playing with words nearly as soon as I learned to write, and my mother and teachers strongly encouraged me to read good, nourishing books and to scribble away as much as I wished. My mother, especially, really nurtured a love for the written word in my sisters and me, and I am so thankful for her direction as a child and young adult.

I began to think seriously about publication a little while after graduating from college. Before that, I’d written a couple of novels for enjoyment and had been adapting children’s books into plays for a local children’s drama troupe that I directed, but I hadn’t really pursued having my work published. Then, in 2013, the Lord opened the doors for my first novel – one that I’d been working on-and-off for years in one form or another – to be published. Next, in 2014, I wrote and published The Fragrance of Geraniums. By God’s grace, readers were blessed by its realistic portrayal of women’s lives in Depression-era Rhode Island and God’s grace toward them. Last winter, I felt led to write a sequel, which is All Our Empty Places, Book Two in what is now the A Time of Grace trilogy. Book Three, yet unnamed, will release this winter, Lord willin’ and the crick don’t rise. ☺

I also have a middle-grade historical fiction series for girls, The Regency Adventures of Jemima Sudbury. Currently, the first book has been published, and I’m looking forward to following that with more in 2016.

What is your favorite Bible verse?
That’s a hard one! God uses different verses to speak to me at different times in my life. But one that comes back to me often is Jeremiah 45:5 – “And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I will bring adversity on all flesh,” says the Lord. “But I will give your life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go.” This verse always cuts straight to the core of the matter, reminding me of Whom I serve, why I do what I do, and to keep my heart right before God, trusting that, even if the Way leads to great loss in this life, He holds my eternal soul in His hands. It is a perspective-changing verse, isn’t it?

What have you read lately that you would recommend?
Oh, I love this question! ☺ What author doesn’t like recommending books? I really enjoyed Tessa Afshar’s In the Field of Grace. I’m not always a fan of fiction based on Scripture, but Afshar did a beautiful job with elaborating on rather than altering the story of Boaz, Ruth, and Naomi. The book is searching and lovely.

What book are you featuring today?
All Our Empty Places, which is Book Two in the A Time of Grace trilogy. Here’s the back-cover description:
In 1935, when the bank calls in her mortgage, Sarah Picoletti – now a penniless widow – finds herself and her children on the brink of homelessness. Sick at heart, she plans to beg her brother in New Jersey to take her family in.

Then Doctor Samuel Giorgi knocks on her door. Godly and well-off, Sam seems to have put the careless ways of his youth behind him, and he also appears to have one desire: to make Sarah his wife, two decades after he broke their engagement.

However, nothing prepares Sarah for the storm that breaks once she makes her decision. Everywhere she turns, the errors of her former choices confront her, insisting on her inferiority and the irreparable brokenness of her past. Sarah begins to wonder if Christ really can bring true redemption or if He is limited by her frailty.

Meanwhile, her daughter Grace faces new challenges in her own life. When her relationship with Paulie changes unexpectedly, Grace realizes that she must make a decision with the potential to alter both of their futures.

Compassionate and intensely poignant, All Our Empty Places paints the portrait of a mother and daughter with broken pasts, who dare to step into a future overflowing with the grace of the Cross.

If you could tell people who are going to read/have read your books one thing, what would it be?

If you ever correspond with me via e-mail, you might notice that 2 Corinthians 4:7 is in my signature line. That verse reads, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” (nkjv) And brokenness is a theme in every one of my books (the middle-grade series excepted). God has pressed it deeply on my heart that people – including me – need to keep going back to that. We need to realize our inadequacy, our brokenness, our inability before God can do anything with us at all. We need to realize that we are, indeed, “earthen vessels” – the commonest type of container, not “special” in-an-of ourselves, but – wonderfully and undeservedly – priceless in His sight. We get our worth from His love for us. And we get our ability through His filling of us day-by-day with the truth of the gospel (that “treasure” spoken of in the verse above) – the Good News that Jesus Christ came to save sinners – and to give them life abundantly in Him. Not a life full of the abundance of “stuff” or of more “religion” – but a full of Christ Himself. He will pour Himself into all our broken places, all our old hurts and inadequacies, if we will let Him.

Review and Giveaway:  Luther and Katharina by Jody Hedlund

Book Blurb:

She was a nun of noble birth. He, a heretic, a reformer…an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire.

In the 16th century, nun Katharina von Bora’s fate fell no further than the Abbey. Until she read the writings of Martin Luther.

His sweeping Catholic church reformation—condemning a cloistered life and promoting the goodness of marriage—awakened her desire for everything she’d been forbidden. Including Martin Luther himself.

Despite the fact that the attraction and tension between them is undeniable, Luther holds fast to his convictions and remains isolated, refusing to risk anyone’s life but his own. And Katharina longs for love, but is strong-willed. She clings proudly to her class distinction, pining for nobility over the heart of a reformer. They couldn’t be more different.

But as the world comes tumbling down around them, and with Luther’s threatened life a constant strain, these unlikely allies forge an unexpected bond of understanding, support and love.

Together, they will alter the religious landscape forever.

My Thoughts:

Wow, what an amazing story! When I picked up Jody Hedlund's latest book, I didn't think that I would be taking such an in-depth journey into Martin and Katharina Luther's lives.

I was enraptured with this story from the very first page. It starts with a bang and doesn't let up. It's one of those books where you sit down to read a page or two and look up 10 chapters later. You know, the kind where you are annoyed to have to return to real life, even for a moment.

When I picked up this book, I was not expecting the complexity of the characters, and the vibrant historical details, and the rich depth of emotions. My heart was dragged along for the ride. It soared and broke for Luther and Katharina at times as they tried to navigate their many differences. I'll be honest... I shed a tear or two for several of the characters. They were so real, it was impossible not to. :)

This book also made me truly appreciate my relationship with God and the religious freedom that we have today. I can't imagine not being able to pray my own thoughts and feelings or not be able to read the Bible.

5 stars just isn't enough for this truly excellent read.

(Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)

Author Mini-view:

Hello, blog family! I'm so glad you stopped by for today's author interview and giveaway! I'm featuring Laura V. Hilton and her book "The Birdhouse" today.

Let's get this interview started!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your writing. (How did you get started? How many books have you written? Where are you on your writing journey?)

I have always wanted to be a writer. I dreamed of writing. That was what I wanted to be when I grew up, so I always played with it and read a lot.   I am multipublished.  My first two books, Hot Chocolate and Shadows of the Past are out of print, but may be self-published (Indy) someday. My other books are, in order:  Patchwork Dreams, A Harvest of Hearts, Promised to Another, Healing Love, Surrendered Love, Awakened Love, A White Christmas in Webster County, Swept Away, The Snow Globe, The Postcard, The Birdhouse, Christmas Mittens, and coming in April 2016, The Amish Firefighter.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Jeremiah 29:11.  For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord. Plans for good and not for evil. Plans to give you a future and a hope.

What have you read lately that you would recommend?   Looking at my blog review page, my favorites in September were Random Acts of Deceit by Christy Barritt, Falling like Snowflakes by Denise Hunter, Captive Trail by Susan Downs, The Perfect Arrangement by Kate Ganshert, and Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand

What book are you featuring today?

The Birdhouse. Here's the blurb:

Twenty–year–old Greta Miller's daed has been injured in a farming accident during the summer. The supportive Amish community tries to help out, but Greta and her sister must work outside the home to make ends meet, and so Greta rents a booth at the farmers' market. Because Greta is still in her rumspringa and free to explore the world, her family selects her to sell her homemade jams, jellies, and preserves to Englischers. Josh Yoder wants to court Greta, but years ago, he made the mistake of rejecting her during a seemingly innocent game; which resulted in him leaving the Amish. Three years later, he's back, but Greta wants nothing to do with him. Josh struggles to fit in and rebuild relationships he destroyed. Knowing Greta's family needs help, he steps in, hoping to win her back. When Greta admires one of his birdhouses, he gives it to her, hoping that it will open the door to more. But as their friendship begins to grow, a series of unfortunate events pull Greta away from the Amish, leaving her rejected by those she loves. Will Greta get beyond her family's distrust and return home? Will she prove her innocence? Or will she remain outside her Amish community?

If you could tell people who are going to read/have read your books one thing, what would it be?

God loves you and He wants you know that you are accepted in the Beloved.

Review: "Siren's Fury" by Mary Weber

Book Blurb:

“I thrust my hand toward the sky as my voice begs the Elemental inside me to waken and rise. But it’s no use. The curse I’ve spent my entire life abhorring—the thing I trained so hard to control—no longer exists.”

Nym risked her life to save Faelen, her homeland, from a losing war, only to discover that the shapeshifter Draewulf has stolen everything she holds dear. But when the repulsive monster robs Nym of her storm-summoning abilities as well, the beautiful Elemental realizes her war is only just beginning.

Now powerless to control the elements that once emboldened her, Nym stows away on an airship traveling to the metallic kingdom of Bron. She must stop Draewulf. But the horrors he’s brought to life and the secrets of Bron are more than Nym bargained for. Then the disturbing Lord Myles tempts her with new powers that could destroy the monster, and Nym must decide whether she can compromise in the name of good even if it costs her very soul.

As she navigates the stark industrial cityscape of Bron, Nym is faced with an impossible choice: change the future with one slice of a blade . . . or sacrifice the entire kingdom for the one thing her heart just can’t let go.

My Thoughts:

After the emotional bombshell that is dropped at the end of Storm Siren, I wasn't sure how the author was going to "fix" it. After reading the next book in the series, all I can say is: You must read it!!!

I don't read very much fantasy fiction, but Ms. Weber has changed my mind... She has the knack for taking completely impossible and hopeless circumstances and somehow making them work out even better than we could imagine.

In this series, I love how each of the characters are so deep and real. Nym is an excellent heroine, independent and tough without being annoying, clever and compassionate without being wimpy.

Draewulf, Rasha, Eogan, and Myles are also excellent characters.

I don't want to give anything away, so you're just gonna have to pick up a copy and check out this wonderful continuation to the story.

5 stars for a truly excellent story!

(I received an e-copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.)

Life Stuff:

Happy October! I hope you are all doing well this month!

It has cooled down to the 60's here in sunny FL. Because of the cooler weather, Hubbins and I have spent more time at the beach, walking during the evenings. I absolutely love the scenery here, so I wanted to share a few pics of our walks together. Hope y'all don't mind. :)

How was your September?

Writing Stuff:

I haven't had a bunch of spare time over the last month, but I am still working on the revision request I got back from the Blurb 2 Book pitch. Also, I'm editing a book for a friend, so my writing plate is quite full this month. :)

Reading Stuff:

Here is the list of the books that I've this month. What are you reading?

And I am currently reading:

Prayer Request Stuff:

Here are the prayer requests that were sent in last month:

Caryl K. - Prayers for soreness in her knee.

Becky I. - Please pray for my family.

Debi S. - Please pray for my husband and my oldest son that they will come to Christ. Also Pray for my youngest who is struggling in school due to special needs.

Alaina N. - Prayers as she starts her new job in a new city.

Bonnie R. - I would appreciate prayers for healing, please!!

Anna H. - Prayers that I will be able to find a job/way to contribute to the family income that won't take too much time away from my writing. Prayers for focus and self-discipline.

Last month's requests:

Wendy N. - Prayers for her granddaughter, Rachel, who is having bariatric surgery on September 8th and would appreciate prayers for success on the surgery and her life afterwards.

Deana D. - Pray for my husband. He has been having problems with blood pressure and is going in for a stress test.

Sonja N. - Prayers for my dad. He's not doing very well.

Thanks so much for your prayers, friends. We all need prayer sometimes and I know that those of us who ask for it are very thankful! :)

Bible Stuff:

I've decided to put a new section in the newsletter this month. I don't know about you, but sometimes I need some accountability when it comes to reading my Bible. Sometimes, I get so scatterbrained that I'll be in bed to go to sleep for the night and realize that I forgot to have a daily quiet time. So, I'll be posting here what I've been reading. :)

Last week, I made an exciting discovery. The Bible app that I have on my smartphone will read the Bible to you! This is terribly exciting to me, because while I don't always have time to sit down and read, I can pull up the app and listen to a chapter or two while I'm doing housework or writing up a blog post. :)

Since I made that discovery, I've listened to Philippians and now I'm 3 chapters into 1st Timothy. What are you reading/listening to this month? :)

Last Month's Winners:

Hearts Undone by Allyson Carter - Joan Arning*

To Dance With Dolphins by Bonnie Leon - Caryl Kane*

Unconditional by Tanya Eavenson - Kathryn Voss*

Where Treasure Hides by Johnnie Alexander - Loraine N.

All winners have a month to reply to my emails or I will draw a new winner. * = winner has claimed her prize. Books will be mailed within the month. Be sure to check back soon for this month's giveaways and reviews. God bless!
