Chapter 5 Neighbors in the Elevator
Chapter 5 Neighbors in the Elevator
The management office is on the first floor.
Under Gui Yuchong's worried gaze and amidst his quiet encouragement, Yan Xun set off.
Perhaps because he spent a lot of time with the other person, he always felt that he had picked up that fragrance on himself—a cloyingly sweet smell.
In the corridor, all the room doors were closed. He remembered that none of his teammates who had appeared in the dungeon with him lived on this floor.
Presumably to prevent imposters from infiltrating, no one dared to let their guard down.
As Yan Xun left room 404 and walked down the corridor, a door at the end of the corridor opened, revealing a man wearing slippers.
The other person was wearing an ill-fitting T-shirt that looked like it had been bought at a night market, paired with jeans and flip-flops. When he saw Yan Xun, he nodded.
"Shall we go get some food?" Yan Xun asked.
Seemingly surprised that Yan Xun would strike up a conversation with him, he nodded, "Yes."
"I live alone, and if I don't get my own food, I'll starve to death."
He sighed as he spoke, "I wonder when we'll finally catch the fake man."
"I think that detector is completely useless."
"Detector?" Yan Xun asked.
"Yes, there's a detector installed at the entrance, supposedly to detect fake people." The man in flip-flops pointed to the corridor as well. "There are surveillance cameras here too, supposedly to prevent fake people from appearing."
"If they appear, they can ring the doorbell inside the room, and the security guards will take these fake people away."
He muttered to himself, "I don't think this security guard is of any use at all."
"Last time they said they caught a fake person, and beat him to death in front of all the residents..."
"It turns out they were just residents."
Flip-Flops naturally brought up the horrific thing—he pointed to a corner, “Look, there’s still that person’s blood over there.”
"Oh dear, if the security guards identify me as a fake, I'll be in trouble."
He sighed as he spoke, "Fortunately, experts will come to resolve this in a week."
This person must be an NPC in the dungeon. Yan Xun looked at the man in flip-flops and walked with him towards the elevator. "Doesn't the fake human have any blood?"
“Anyway, they’re different from normal people like us,” the man in flip-flops said. “If you feel something’s off about them, they’re probably a fake.”
He said this as he and Yan Xun entered the elevator—
The elevator was surprisingly easy to wait for today; the doors opened shortly after the two of them pressed the button.
Yan Xun walked into the elevator and found that, just like the disordered floors, the elevator buttons in the building were also disordered—like a bank keypad for entering passwords, where the numbers were never in their normal positions.
There is a mirror in the elevator.
Yan Xun leaned against the wall, watching as Flip-Flops pressed the button for the first floor.
The building's floors were arranged in a random order, but the elevators remained in the same location—Yan Xun looked at the floors that lit up out of order while listening to Flip-Flops ask, "Do you live alone?"
"I don't think I've seen you before."
“I live with my friends,” Yan Xun said. According to the plan, he came to stay with his ex-boyfriend—he didn’t live in the Meimei Building before.
"You're really unlucky," said Flip-Flops. "You've only just arrived and this is already happening."
He kept looking at the screen in the elevator as he spoke, which showed which floor they were on... Yan Xun glanced at him and then said, "I've also lost my job, which makes things even worse."
He chatted idly with the flip-flops, but his eyes were always on the floor display above.
After realizing that there were still at least 15 floors to go before reaching the first floor, Yan Xun's palms started to sweat.
Because he suddenly discovered something—
The toes of men wearing flip-flops all seem to grow backwards.
He could clearly see the fingertips on the edge of the flip-flops, but he couldn't see the other person's fingernails.
All ten toes were turned upside down.
Perhaps because Yan Xun acted so naturally, the flip-flops hadn't yet realized that Yan Xun had discovered he wasn't human... He was still looking at the screen in the elevator and didn't turn his head. "But your friend was willing to take you in, so he must be a good person."
"It's alright," Yan Xun said dismissively.
He and his flip-flops were looking at the elevator screen together—
From the moment they entered the elevator, it never stopped moving again.
In a building with such a high occupancy rate, this is extremely unnatural. Yan Xun still remembers that the elevator stayed on the first floor for a long time last night.
And... Yan Xun calculated the time; at least fifteen minutes had passed since he entered the elevator.
Even with so many floors in between, it shouldn't be that we haven't reached the first floor yet if the elevator hasn't stopped...
"Ding--"
With a familiar sound of the elevator stopping, Yan Xun realized that the elevator had arrived at the first floor.
"I'm lucky today," said Flip-Flops. "There's nobody else here."
As the elevator doors opened, he said to Yan Xun, "Let's hurry up and get some food."
"Otherwise, all the good stuff will be taken by others."
“That’s true.” Yan Xun said, and walked out of the elevator with his flip-flops… Outside was a familiar corridor, with the management office sign faintly visible.
The elevator door faces an emergency exit.
The half-closed emergency exit was pitch black, and it was impossible to see if anyone was inside.
The moment the flip-flop's foot stepped out of the elevator door, Yan Xun kicked the other person, sending him flying out of the door. Then, he frantically pressed the close button!
The flip-flops he kicked out the door turned around and looked at Yan Xun.
He didn't leave immediately; he just stood at the elevator entrance and smiled at Yan Xun.
"You've discovered it."
Just as he was about to reach out, the elevator doors closed in front of Yan Xun.
This instance is not so simple, Yan Xun thought, so when the elevator started moving upwards but stopped on the second floor, he was not surprised at all.
"Ding--"
The elevator doors opened again.
Standing outside the door was a smiling man in flip-flops.
He was standing less than a meter from the elevator door... and the elevator door closed right in front of him.
Immediately afterwards, the elevator went to the next floor, and flip-flops appeared at the elevator door, even closer than before.
—Finally, after the elevator doors opened countless times.
The flip-flops' face was almost pressed against the open elevator door.
He gave a stiff smile and moved his lips slightly towards Yan Xun in the elevator.
Yan Xun understood what he meant.
'Next time.'
The next time the door opens, he will enter the elevator.
