Chapter 419 A gluttonous feast
Chapter 419 A gluttonous feast
"who are you?"
"Who are you?"
Rayleigh stared warily at Hernold and the others. He was shirtless, and despite his scarred body, he stood tall. "I am Lieutenant Rayleigh, the militia captain of Southsea Town. These are refugees... Are you here to rescue them?"
Hernold looked the group of unfortunate souls up and down; their clothes were tattered and they were covered in wounds...
“I am Captain Herod, the Blade of Light from Scarlet Monastery. We are here to arrest Mayor Bourne. That fellow is unforgivable and must be burned at the stake! Where is he… You’re all refugees? Quite sturdy refugees, the food looks good…”
Herold spotted several wounded men clad in old-fashioned white armor from Lordaeron. With a wave of his hand, a pack of ferocious, blood-red guards rushed forward, seized them, and slammed them to the ground. "These men are traitors from Hillsbrad Foothills. They must be taken back for questioning!"
“I’m sorry, Captain Hernold, I think you’ve got it wrong… We don’t have any traitors here. And now is not the time to arrest and interrogate people! We must evacuate as soon as possible; those monsters… are coming our way soon…”
Lieutenant Rayleigh hurriedly explained that he was the highest-ranking officer here, and the survivors all followed his lead.
Hernold shook his head. "Monsters? We're here to eliminate all heretics! To purify all monsters, including the infected. You lied, but you'll still be investigated and arrested!"
The guards obeyed, and Rayleigh immediately led his men to take up arms.
"So you've been exposed already? Hmph, I bet you're all remnants of Mayor Bourne's rebel army, and the monster is in cahoots with you too..."
Rayleigh angrily shouted, "This is absurd! Let's get out of here!"
"Where do you think you're going! Stop them... Don't let a single one escape..."
"you..."
Amidst the fierce conflicts and farcical incidents below, Lorraine is quite lively.
As Lorraine fled, he could always hear the mayor's mocking words... "Run, little one, the farther the better... I'll be there soon to feast on your flesh and blood..."
He felt as if someone was whispering in his ear while lying on his back.
He realized this was the Faceless Ones' innate ability to influence human thought. In the depths of the abyss, the High Elder of the Abyss Council, the Spider-Destroyer, had said that the Old Gods were most adept at controlling the consciousness of corrupted life forms and influencing the minds of intelligent beings... They could even corrupt the Titan Guardians over countless years...
Transform the immortal Titan creations into finite, flesh-and-blood beings.
Logically speaking, it was the existence of the ancient gods, like a virus, that made the originally immortal bodies fragile, and the earliest stone and steel creations gradually weakened into flesh and blood life.
Lorraine was somewhat skeptical of this claim. In reality, the human body contains various complex elements and forces, with a precise structure capable of high-speed operation. While absorbing and decomposing energy and matter, it also supports the operation of thought and consciousness.
This is undoubtedly greater and more complex than the so-called rigid creations of the Titans.
The miracle of life cannot be explained simply by the fact that a virus corrupts immortal steel, machinery, and inanimate objects.
This is merely a clumsy tactic employed by the Old Gods, who excel at controlling and manipulating thought processes; a false creation doctrine believed only by Twilight's followers... If life were truly created by the Titans, then the various beings existing in Azeroth, including humans, elves, trolls, orcs, tauren, elemental creatures, and beasts, would no longer be considered creations solely through the power of the Titans.
Rather, it is a diverse, complex, and magnificent life form that evolved from the fusion of six fundamental forces, or even more...
Lorraine would rather believe his teacher's boastful nonsense than the twisted, seductive whispers of a town mayor who had willingly fallen into depravity, abandoning humanity and human form. He ran headlong into the group of Archmage Jordan the Pure One. Due to their identities as necromancers, neither side exchanged words and immediately began a magical exchange.
With the help of Terra and his werewolf minions, Lorraine kicked down many Scarlet Crusade members one by one.
Below, Hernold saw no sign of his teammates coming to his aid on the other side. Instead, he saw many of his fallen comrades lying in blood, confirming his belief that the rebels had launched an attack. He even mistook Rayleigh and others, who claimed to be survivors, for spies and wanted to capture them...
The current situation is that Lorraine and Terra are fighting against the Scarlet Crusaders crammed into a narrow staircase amidst the crowd.
Behind him, Mayor Born, now a weakened Faceless One, leisurely enjoyed his meal... inching closer to Lorraine. Like a cat playing with a mouse...
On the other side, the Crimson Warrior Herold and the others were unaware of the danger, only realizing that the Faceless Ones were somewhat terrifying, as they drained the living dry and did not spare the dead either.
The blood-soaked ghouls of Lorraine... one by one turned into nourishment, and piles of white bones fell to the ground.
Rayleigh and the survivors finally remembered how so many soldiers and comrades had been captured, taken away, drained of their life force, and hung on the wall in an instant...
Herold ordered his men to charge, and he himself charged towards a smaller Faceless One...
These smaller Faceless Ones were considerably smaller and weaker than the ones Lorraine had first encountered, yet they remained equally unbeatable. Conventional magic and physical attacks were nearly ineffective. As they absorbed more flesh and soul, the Faceless Ones visibly grew larger and moved with even greater speed.
They could also spray a pool of black liquid onto the crowd, instantly dissolving ordinary human soldiers who were hit by it...
Herod cried out, "Blade of Light! Holy Light grants me strength!"
The paladins immediately began chanting holy light magic. Under the blessing and empowerment of the holy light, Herod's Destroyer Giant Whirlwind Axe actually managed to wound a Faceless One, causing the opponent to slow down slightly.
Lelein exclaimed, "Attacking with Holy Light magic is effective..."
Herold turned and glared at Leylein, the meaning being: "I'll deal with you later... You think you're so smart? I don't know..." Countless holy light spells followed. The Scarlet Crusade's holy light spells were not as powerful as Lieutenant Leylein's, but their faith was genuine, and the holy light would respond to these fanatical individuals just the same...
The Faceless Ones were temporarily repelled, but in reality, they could rise again simply by devouring the remains of a human.
Hernold suddenly realized that it was impossible to completely eliminate the tentacle monster. Before he could call for a retreat, many of the soldiers behind him had already begun to flee along the route they had come from, led by Rayleigh and his men...
Herold yelled, "You haven't been investigated yet, where do you think you're going?"
With that, he raised his battle axe and chased after Rayleigh and the others... The soldiers present continued to fight, and many fell one after another. The smart ones followed the Crimson Warrior to chase after Rayleigh, who was suspected of being a rebel.
Those who aren't clever will end up alongside the unlucky ones with severe injuries, becoming food for the Faceless Ones...
Lorraine also encountered trouble, with their path blocked completely. The Scarlet Crusade's hatred for necromancers was palpable... They simply refused to dodge or evade, blocking the werewolf minions' attacks.
As soon as Lorraine turned around, she sensed Mayor Bourne slowly approaching from behind.
By the firelight, Lorraine could even see the shadow cast by the mayor's three-headed body, grinning maliciously as he slowly approached, ready to devour the souls of these foolish humans who had jumped into hell...
