Chapter 328: Completed Just Like That
Chapter 328: Completed Just Like That
Alistair White?
Nina Jacobs was a little surprised.
"Veronica Ziegler was hired by Alistair White. Later, Magnus York heard that she’d been to the Bishop Clan’s territory and recruited her."
Ian Nash watched the slaughter outside the Sand Shield and decided to spill everything without hesitation.
Seeing the confused look on Nina Jacobs’s face, Lily Dalton added:
"Right. The two of them seem to be rivals. Alistair White’s side doesn’t report its status to Magnus York. I get the feeling they’re trying to one-up each other over this matter?"
"It’s not just a feeling. I heard they belong to some organization, and the number of stones they find affects their future promotions?"
Sebastian Lynch chimed in.
As she listened, Nina Jacobs conjured two Diamond Sand Spikes and casually finished off a couple of Mutant Beasts that had been knocked in front of her.
This Veronica Ziegler had appeared near the Bishop Clan’s territory as early as two months ago.
’But she never left. What is her real goal?’
Though she had yet to meet the woman, Nina Jacobs was already wary of her.
As a Mutant Tiger breathed its last, the System sent a notification for the completion of 7-Day Quest 2.
[7-Day Quest 2 detected as complete. 7-Day Quest 3 has been automatically initiated:
Quest Objective: Hunt 70 Mutated/Zombie Animals
Quest Reward: 40,000 System Experience Points.]
As expected, it was an incremental quest.
The kill count had just increased to seventy.
Just as Magnus York and her people thought it was all about to end, a roiling wave of dust in the distance caught their attention.
Accompanying the massive, sand-yellow wave was the sound of rumbling footsteps.
"It’s a horde of Mutated Animals!"
Eryx Rhodes’s hands were already numb from the vibrations of his weapon.
He had guessed they might attract other Mutated Animals, but he never expected so many.
The dust was rolling in so thickly that it was impossible to even see how many Mutated Animals there were.
"We should fall back! If we don’t retreat now, we really won’t be able to hold them off!"
Ben Lawson was also starting to panic.
But Magnus York refused.
"The more that come, the more it proves there’s something good here. Besides, do you really think we can retreat now?"
They were covered in the stench of blood.
If they fled, there was no telling what else they would attract.
Sure enough, after hearing this, Ben Lawson and the others hesitated.
Magnus York then had Eryx Rhodes take out several large bags of Mutated Crystal Cores and throw them on the ground, followed by some devices that resembled tranquilizer guns.
Seeing this, the others picked up the Crystal Cores and began to absorb them.
"They’re insane."
Ian Nash remarked, watching the group.
"Is that... zombie virus?!"
When they saw Eryx Rhodes take out several more metal, tube-shaped containers, the three people inside the Sand Shield paled.
"Are you crazy? If you turn all the Mutated Animals here into zombie animals, no one will get out of here alive!"
Sebastian Lynch shouted.
They previously believed that animals had a natural ability to avoid disasters, which was why many of the animals here hadn’t been exposed to the virus-laden acid rain.
This led to the mountain being populated mostly by Mutated Animals.
But if they turned so many Mutated Animals into zombie animals, then today would truly end in a fight to the death.
Magnus York just smiled. "So what?"
Her divination had already shown that today’s operation would be fraught with danger.
As long as there was a chance of survival, what did sacrificing a few people matter?
"If we all die, you won’t be able to escape either."
Magnus York said.
That Earth Defense Shield was, after all, controlled by a Superpower.
She refused to believe that Summer Warner’s Superpower could last forever.
Magnus York’s plan was a success.
The stampeding Mutated Animals first tore into the animal corpses littering the ground.
And those corpses had already been injected with the zombie virus.
A zombified Mutant Tiger soon charged toward the people inside the Sand Shield.
"What do we do now?"
Lily Dalton asked, staring at the massive, rotting tiger head right in front of them.
Although Nina Jacobs still appeared calm and composed.
The other three were scared to death.
Anyone surrounded by several giant zombie animals would probably find it hard to remain calm.
Smelling the fresh stench of decay, Ian Nash wished he could just knock himself out with a club.
Out of the trio’s sight, a look of excitement appeared on Nina Jacobs’s face.
Among these Mutated Animals were at least forty-odd mutated beetles, which had now all turned into zombie beetles.
The toughest parts of the zombie beetles’ shells had already fallen off, leaving only mangled limbs and the rotten flesh in the middle.
’For someone like me who’s on a quest, isn’t this just like being handed free experience points?!’
Flowing, liquid flames streamed out from beneath the Sand Shield.
Several giant zombie tigers didn’t retreat. Even with their limbs engulfed in flames, their eyes were fixed only on the fresh flesh within their reach.
"What is..."
Lily Dalton stared in shock at the orange-yellow liquid flowing across the ground.
Because it flowed so slowly, it didn’t seem to have any Attack Power, and the newly zombified animals didn’t try to avoid it.
In just a few minutes, the area outside the Sand Shield had turned into a sea of fire!
Meanwhile, the other people stood in the distance, a row of weapons at the ready, just waiting for Magnus York’s command.
"What happened?"
A Fire Element Superpower User muttered, gazing at the spreading sea of fire.
They hadn’t even seen clearly how the flames had appeared.
All they knew was that dozens of zombie animals were now roaring within the inferno.
The Sand Shield was also engulfed by the sea of fire.
It wasn’t until the roars faded and the flames gradually died down that the Sand Shield was revealed once more.
Nina Jacobs looked at her quest log with satisfaction.
She had somehow completed Quest 3 just like that.
The System notified her that Quest 4 had automatically begun, requiring 80 Mutated/Zombie Animals, with the Experience Points reward increased to 50,000.
Gazing at the scorched earth around them, Nina Jacobs dismissed the Sand Shield.
The once-chaotic battlefield had now fallen silent.
Lily Dalton and the other two quickly gathered the Beast Cores from the ground, even bagging them up to carry for Nina Jacobs.
"Now what?" Ben Lawson asked, looking at that group.
They had all realized something.
If Summer Warner and Wayne Warner were also after the Mystic Ice Core, then their greatest adversaries now weren’t the Mutated Animals, but the two of them.
"We’ll just have to find a chance to kill them."
A shadow fell over Magnus York’s eyes. They could bide their time and find an opportunity to kill her.
Nina Jacobs overheard their entire conversation.
Her gaze, however, shifted to another direction.
Someone was coming.
A lot of someones.
The sound of applause came from the distance. The expressions on Magnus York and her group changed as they looked over.
"What an eye-opener. I never would have thought an expert would show up in a place like this."
Alistair White appeared from not far away.
Behind him followed a large, intimidating crowd of people.
"Ian Logan, what is the meaning of this?"
Magnus York saw that Ian Logan and the others who had fled earlier were among them.
Not only that, but next to Alistair White was an incredibly familiar face.
"That’s Veronica Ziegler."
Lily Dalton whispered a reminder from behind Nina Jacobs.
"Looks like things are about to get interesting."
Seeing the situation, Nina Jacobs also changed her plans.
She had originally planned to have Adrian Shaw and the others come out.
But it was clear that now was not the time.
"Veronica Ziegler? Weren’t you injured?"
Ben Lawson asked.
Right now, Veronica Ziegler’s complexion was rosy and her movements were nimble. Where was there even a hint of an injury?
"Alistair had a Healer fix me up."
Veronica Ziegler replied in a soft voice.
"So you revealed our location to them?"
Magnus York asked in a low, dangerous voice.
