Chapter 273 - 272: Initial Exploration
Lin Xinghai was surprised because the monitoring squad’s row of black mecha were all completely identical.
These weren’t just prototype models; they had all been modified.
Normally, however, modifications would incorporate some personal style or be tailored to better suit the pilot. Modifying them to be identical made no sense.
Seeing the surprise on Lin Xinghai’s face, Zhuo Yongyuan had a good idea of what he was thinking. "You’re surprised that all our mecha look the same, aren’t you?"
Lin Xinghai had nothing to hide and simply nodded.
"The first time I saw them, I was just as surprised as you. But once I understood the reasoning, I had to admit it’s a genius design."
"There are two reasons for this. First, every part of these mecha is modular. They can be detached and replaced anytime they need to be."
"For example, if my mecha’s left arm gets damaged, I can just jettison it, pick any squad member weaker than me, and swap it with their mecha’s left arm."
"The entire process is assisted by magnetic systems. With no operational errors, it can be done in just ten seconds. This means I can even replace my mecha’s arm in the middle of a fight."
"The second and most important point is that these mecha can resonate at the same frequency, creating a special magnetic field that can crush everything around them. It’s a combined-attack array commonly used by the military."
"So, while one of these military mecha might not be that impressive on its own, their combat effectiveness multiplies when they operate as a squad," Zhuo Yongyuan explained.
Lin Xinghai couldn’t help but draw a sharp breath. ’I might have underestimated these military folks,’ he thought.
"In that case, I’m really looking forward to seeing just how powerful your military’s combined-attack array is," Lin Xinghai couldn’t help but say.
"I’d rather we didn’t have to use it. If we do, it means we’re in serious trouble," Zhuo Yongyuan said, shaking his head.
"True enough!"
After a brief chat, they each boarded their mecha.
The eleven mecha quickly departed the base camp and vanished into the night.
This was the first time Lin Xinghai had used a mecha just for travel. Normally, piloting a mecha required activating the brainwave interface, which consumed a great deal of Perception Power. Most people wouldn’t do it.
This time, however, after Lin Xinghai had agreed to help the military, they had made some modifications to his Speed Mecha. The main change was installing a wheeled device on its legs.
This wheeled device acted as a peripheral, so it could be used without activating the brainwave interface. It even had an auto-drive function, and it was quite fast.
Its only drawback was that it required a relatively flat road surface to function.
However, most of the roads in Guanghan City had already been cleared, so using the wheeled device to advance was no problem.
The squad advanced rapidly. The zombies they encountered along the way posed no threat whatsoever, and they soon entered the Guanghan City limits.
At that point, they could faintly hear the sound of gunfire.
After traveling a bit farther, they could see some Mercenary Corps surrounding buildings. Burning Bullets were fired inside, instantly setting the places ablaze. The zombies within were forced out, only to be cut down by a hail of gunfire.
Lin Xinghai spared it only a glance before leaping past with the monitoring squad.
The First Brigade would likely be carrying out a similar mission tonight. It wasn’t very dangerous, so there wouldn’t be any problems, even without him there.
The squad moved quickly, plowing straight through any zombie hordes they encountered without losing any speed.
Just over twenty minutes later, they left the cleared zone.
"Stay sharp. Our goal isn’t to wipe out zombies, so we’ll bypass any hordes we can avoid."
"Our objective is to cross through the Industrial Park and probe deeper into the territory beyond," Zhuo Yongyuan said.
Of course, his words were meant primarily for Lin Xinghai.
Lin Xinghai remained silent. He was well aware that the military was the main force in this operation; he was only here to assist. He wouldn’t interfere unless their command made a major blunder.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
The mecha sped forward, their massive frames and incredible speed creating a series of sonic booms.
This naturally attracted the attention of zombie hordes, but the mecha were simply too fast. At full throttle, they could even exceed the speed of sound.
By the time the zombie hordes even began to react, the mecha had already shot past them, disappearing into the night.
Soon, Lin Xinghai and the others reached the Industrial Park.
Zhuo Yongyuan, who was leading the way, showed no intention of stopping and continued to press forward.
Just then, however, Lin Xinghai, who had been quiet the whole time, suddenly frowned.
He looked at the numbers displayed on his Zombie Detector and suddenly spoke up. "Captain Zhuo, I want to do a scan of the Industrial Park."
"What is it? Did you find something?" Zhuo Yongyuan immediately gave the matter his full attention.
He had to take any suggestion from Lin Xinghai seriously.
"Before this operation, my Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps explored this Industrial Park. The zombie density wasn’t this high back then," Lin Xinghai said, having no reason to hide it.
"The zombies have gotten denser?" Zhuo Yongyuan murmured, then asked, "By how much, approximately?"
"It’s hard to estimate. That’s why I need to do a full scan," Lin Xinghai said.
"Alright! You take the lead then!" Zhuo Yongyuan said decisively.
Without another word, Lin Xinghai took the lead, piloting his mecha to the front of the formation.
There were no weaklings in the monitoring squad. Even at night, deep within the Industrial Park, their movements were completely unimpeded.
In less than ten minutes, Lin Xinghai had led the squad on a wide sweep of the area.
"What’s the situation?" Zhuo Yongyuan asked immediately upon their return to the starting point.
"The zombie density has increased by about 30% since the last time I was here," said Lin Xinghai.
Zhuo Yongyuan’s brow furrowed at the news. A 30% increase was no small number; it clearly wasn’t from natural growth.
After a moment of silence, Zhuo Yongyuan said, "Let’s keep moving. We’ll scout out the Mutated Zombie situation first and then report everything at once."
Lin Xinghai had no objections. After all, the Mutated Zombies were the most critical factor.
The team soon pressed on, crossing the Industrial Park and advancing another three kilometers.
They finally found traces of Mutated Zombies. There were a lot of them; their initial scan already counted over thirty.
More importantly, not only were these thirty Mutated Zombies gathered in small groups, but the distance between each cluster was extremely small.
Thirty Mutated Zombies were all gathered within a one-kilometer radius.
This immediately extinguished any thought Lin Xinghai had of carrying out a decapitation strike.
