Chapter 299 What a sin!
Chapter 299 What a sin!
When Lin's mother saw her daughter return, she patted her hand and said, "It's so cold outside, where have you been again? Why don't you go and stay with your third brother? That way you won't be running around everywhere."
"Mom, I don't need to. Why should I stay with him? There's not enough room on his side. If I go over there, won't I be blocking his way?"
"I'm doing fine here. I can keep warm by leaning on you."
"You! Your third brother won't hit you, what's wrong with being with him?"
Lin Cai smiled but didn't respond to that question. Then she turned around and looked behind her: "Where are Father and my eldest brother? Why aren't they here?"
"They've all gone out to find food; they're starving. If we don't get something to eat soon, we won't be able to survive!"
Upon hearing this, Lin Cai did not continue the question; she kept staring at Dong Ge, who was leaning against the Buddha statue not far away.
Not long after, Old Man Lin returned with his men. They hadn't found anything to eat; what they found was the same as what everyone else had.
It consisted of tree bark and some grass roots. The father gave the easiest parts to digest to the mother, who then gave them to her daughter.
Lin Cai pushed the grass and roots back, then pulled her mother up: "Mother, I don't want to eat right now. Would you like to come for a walk with me?"
Upon hearing this, Lin's mother disagreed. She knew what her daughter was planning, but this was absolutely impossible; if anyone found out...
Lin's mother didn't even dare to think about it; if people found out, just how terrifying would this be?
She pulled her daughter down to sit beside her and said very seriously, "It's so cold outside, why are you still running around outside?"
"What am I supposed to do if they get sick or injured?"
As Lin's mother spoke, tears began to fall from her eyes, and Lin Cai panicked upon seeing this.
She just wanted to go out and get some food, is that not allowed?
She didn't want to see them go hungry, didn't want to see them eat tree bark and grass roots.
Lin's mother wouldn't let her go out, so Lin Cai couldn't take out all the food she was eating. But even if she wanted to go out to relieve herself, Lin's mother would follow her.
They spent a day and a night in the dilapidated temple, while the people of Gujia Village found some tree bark and possibly edible grass roots outside to fill their stomachs.
However, the people who originally lived in the dilapidated temple never left.
If they didn't go out, it meant they wouldn't have anything to eat. After sleeping all morning, Dong Ge hadn't eaten anything, and by the afternoon he was getting a little impatient. He kicked someone who was close to him.
The man had his eyes closed, but after being kicked, he immediately opened them. He glanced at Brother Dong, said nothing, stood up, and ran out.
Lin Cai narrowed her eyes slightly when she saw the person run out. It seemed that what happened this morning was not the first time. The reason they hadn't gone out to find food was because they didn't need to, because they were waiting for food.
Thinking about this made Lin Cai feel nauseous and want to vomit, and the way they looked at her also made her feel extremely disgusted.
The person who had just gone out returned quickly. After returning, he whispered something in Dong Ge's ear, and Dong Ge immediately stood up.
"What did you say? You didn't find them? Then where did they go? Are you sure you're in the right place? Are you sure you're not in the wrong place?"
"Brother Dong, how could I be wrong? The place is exactly the same, nothing has changed, but there's nothing there."
Dong Ge stood up and suddenly roared, startling everyone in the dilapidated temple.
Lin Cai heard what the two were talking about and knew what they were looking for. Then she glanced at Lin Hu, who had just returned not long ago.
The brother and sister seemed to be on the same wavelength; when the brother looked at his sister, the sister was also looking at her brother.
When Lin Hu saw his sister looking at him, a smile appeared on his face, and Lin Cai knew what that smile meant.
Lin Long, sitting next to the siblings, noticed their little antics and narrowed his eyes slightly.
Dong Ge over there was now furious, yelling at the person he had grabbed, "Explain yourself! What exactly happened? How come there's no one here?"
"I...I...I don't know what happened. Anyway, when I went there, there was no one there. Even those...all of them were gone, not a single one."
After the man finished speaking, Dong Ge immediately threw him to the ground and rushed out. The people behind him heard their conversation and knew what the man had just done.
Now that they heard them say that everything was gone, those who were calm immediately became anxious and grabbed the person who had just gone out.
"How could it be gone? How could it be gone? How dare they...!"
"Are they all out of their minds? Don't they want to live? How dare they do this?"
When Lin Cai heard what they were saying and saw how emotional they were, her heart sank. She had originally thought there were only a few people.
Surprisingly, almost half of the people here participated.
Are they even human? Do they even deserve to be called human?
They're capable of doing things like that; don't they ever think about their families?
One of the elderly men grabbed the man, shouting, "How could you do this? How could you do this?"
"You've already taken the person away, how can they just disappear now? How could they possibly disappear?"
But the man wasn't one to be easily manipulated. Upon hearing what the old man said, he pushed the person away.
"If it's gone, it's gone. What does it have to do with Dad? It's not like I took it away."
He was gone; the fear he had felt earlier was gone, as was the timid look he had in front of Dong Ge.
He pushed the old man to the ground and looked down at him condescendingly: "The fact that the person was taken away is just your bad luck. What does it have to do with me?"
"Let me tell you, I didn't take the person away. It has nothing to do with me. If you want to blame me for this, then don't blame me for being impolite."
After he finished speaking, he found a seat and sat down. The others, having heard what he said, dared not say anything more.
The old man's family pulled him to their side and then held him back from rushing forward.
He was still muttering, "What a tragedy! What a tragedy! It's truly a tragedy!"
"God, are you trying to kill us by not letting us live?"
Hearing these words, Lin Cai lowered her head, tugging at the grass roots in her hand, lost in thought.
