Chapter 128: Something Happened
It was late autumn, the season of great harvest. The village had a good harvest, and a harvest festival was to be held. Lu Yu and his group had already been informed.
Ji Meiqing was teaching Ji Tianci to read in the room. When she saw him come in, she didn't get up.
Lu Yu walked in and said directly, "The village chief has invited us to the harvest feast. Let's go together."
She hesitated for a moment before declining Lu Yu's offer: "I'd better not go, lest some people feel uncomfortable seeing me."
“Let’s go together then, Ji Tianci.” He looked at Ji Tianci beside him, and Ji Meiqing was also looking at him.
Ji Tianci looked up from the book, his expression blank.
"I'm going to a banquet with Brother Lu in a few days. Do you want to go? Or you could stay home and study."
Ji Tianci agreed to the offer without even thinking about it.
She turned her head, resting her cheek on her hand, her expression thoughtful. Ji Tianci looked at her again, puzzled, and asked, "Aren't you going?"
Ji Meiqing gently patted his head, "Read to me, don't interrupt."
He covered the spot where he had been slapped; although the force wasn't strong, it still felt vaguely numb.
After watching for a while, Ji Meiqing said to Lu Yu, "Let's go out first."
Lu Yu nodded in agreement. Ji Meiqing then looked at Ji Tianci, who was reading a book, and instructed him, "You better study hard. If you don't pass my test when I come back tonight, don't even think about going."
Ji Tianci stuck his tongue out at her, and only after the door was closed did he continue reading.
The two went outside, avoiding the chicks that were running around. Several months passed, and the chicks that were originally a large flock had been reduced to just a few.
"Let's go check out that restaurant. It just opened recently, so we should go and take care of it."
"Let's go." He didn't seem to have any objections, but said, "I heard business over there hasn't been very good lately. A newly opened shop shouldn't be like this. I'm afraid those rumors will start spreading again."
"Rumors are just rumors. Besides, the murder case has long been closed. The dead can't cause trouble anymore."
She didn't care about ghosts at all. The idea of ghosts and spirits was incredibly far-fetched. If anyone had to believe in their existence, Ji Meiqing herself was a ghost, so why would she be afraid of those rumors?
The two arrived at the restaurant quickly, and it was indeed as Lu Yu had said: the business was deserted, and there wasn't a single person in sight.
As soon as the two of them entered, the waiter and the manager came over immediately.
"Boss, boss lady." They both looked tired and listless, with rags draped over their hands.
They went inside, and the table was clean, but there was no one there.
"There were quite a lot of people here when it opened that day."
The waiter and the shopkeeper both sighed, their tone quite helpless, "They're only available for two days now, after a few days they'll be gone."
"Really?" She looked around at the people, then at the outside. The place was still bustling with people, but the shop itself was eerily deserted.
The restaurant's menu has been changed, and all the dishes on it are new. Logically speaking, this shouldn't be the case.
Lu Yu walked over to the signs and looked at them. The waiter followed him and said nervously, "Not many people will eat these dishes."
"Oh," he replied casually.
The dishes listed above are all things he usually eats at home. He knows how they taste.
Ji Meiqing followed him over and, seeing him looking at it so intently, couldn't help but ask, "How is it? Is there something wrong with the menu?"
“No.” He looked at the waiter again. “Has anything strange happened these past few days?”
"Strange? No, it's not strange. The strange thing is that someone outside brought up those old stories from the past."
"I understand. Let's leave it at that for now. Don't worry, business will pick up in a few days."
She smiled, then pulled Lu Yu away, leaving the bewildered waiter and shopkeeper behind.
After the two stepped out of the door, Ji Meiqing looked at him and asked, "Now the problem is clear, isn't it?"
How did you know there was a mole among us?
“Old stories are usually forgotten, so it’s strange that they’re being brought up again now. We also need to investigate those old stories.” She had already made up her mind that he would make a big fuss about this until the truth was revealed.
Lu Yu said, "You suspect that someone is manipulating this matter."
“Yes, we need to go see the former owner of this place. He should know something; at least there were some things he hadn’t told us before.” She smiled mysteriously, which left Lu Yu completely baffled.
The two went back to the place they had visited before. Ji Meiqing handed over the visiting card, saying, "Please inform them that Ji Qing is here to visit."
"Please wait."
The servant took the visiting card over, and Lu Yu asked curiously, "When did you prepare this visiting card?"
"I have several copies here, do you want to take a look?" She took a bunch out of her bag, and the names on them were all those of people with some status in the city.
Lu Yu returned it to him after reading it, just as the person inside came out. It was the owner of the restaurant from last time who came out to greet him personally.
Ji Meiqing didn't wear men's clothing this time; she consciously stood behind Lu Yu, blocking him from view.
"Hello, you must be Young Master Lu, this way please." He was very friendly and invited the man inside.
After bustling around serving tea and water, Ji Meiqing began to restrain her temper and act like a virtuous housewife. Lu Yu understood her thoughts and spoke directly to the shop owner.
"We all need to be honest in business. I wonder if Mr. Ye thinks the same way, since you also have a share in this business." He also put on an air of superiority, leisurely sipping tea leaves from his teacup.
Upon hearing this, Ye Qiu began to feign ignorance, "What are you doing...?"
Seeing that he was still pretending, Ji Meiqing put her teacup on the table and said, "Young Master Ye, you are too dishonest in doing business. My brother and husband have been ripped off by you this time."
Ye Qiu's gaze fell upon them, and Ji Meiqing quickly lowered her head, pretending she hadn't said anything. Lu Yu leaned forward slightly and said again, "My wife doesn't understand. Please forgive her."
"Oh, it's nothing, it's nothing." He smiled appreciatively. "Your wife certainly has a personality."
"Hmm..." He smiled, somewhat agreeing with what he said.
The topic had been diverted, but Lu Yu quickly steered it back, saying, "I think you haven't explained the matter of the death in the restaurant to us yet."
Ye Qiu's expression remained unchanged as he continued to joke with him, "I don't quite understand what you're saying."
“Someone died in the restaurant. I don’t think you told us that you were framed.” Lu Yu brought it up, then asked, “Is it because you’re unwilling to talk about it, or is there something else going on?”
