Chapter 17 Cleaning up
Chapter 17 Cleaning up
The next morning, the Lin family of four got up early. They had many things to do that day.
The air in the mountains was very fresh in the morning. Lin's mother took a deep breath and exclaimed, "The air here is so good. I feel much more comfortable."
Mr. Lin replied with a smile, "Me too. My legs feel very light today. It seems that the feng shui here is very suitable for us. We will build a house here in the future."
Lin Yan listened with a smile but said nothing.
This thatched hut has been uninhabited for a long time and is quite dilapidated. It's springtime now and the weather is nice, so it's fine. But once summer comes and there's more rain, I'm afraid this thatched hut will become uninhabitable.
Right now, if they were to build a house, they wouldn't have enough money. Lin's father needed to do some basic repairs on this thatched hut first. He needed to find some yellow mud to mend the cracks in the walls. He also needed to replace the thatch on the roof to make it waterproof.
Lin's father said, "I'll go to the village and ask around to buy some dried thatch."
Most people in the village actually live in thatched huts and mud-walled houses; only a minority can afford to live in brick and tile houses.
So every summer, every household would cut some thatch grass, dry it, and then use it in the fall to repair the roof or make thatch ropes. So most villagers should still have some leftover thatch grass at home, and Lin's father is going to collect it.
Lin's father returned after half an hour, but he didn't bring anything with him. Lin Yan was still wondering about this when she looked back and saw Li Xiaocao and Li Dashu following behind in Uncle Li's donkey cart, which was loaded with several bundles of thatch.
Now, most villagers know about the division of the Lin family's eldest branch and the separation of the Lin family by the old man and woman. However, most of them feel sorry for the Lin father's family. Over the years, the Lin father had handed over all the money he earned to his family, but in the end, when trouble came, he was kicked out of his home.
Li Xiaocao and Lin Yan were very close friends; they used to play together often. Therefore, the Li and Lin families had frequent interactions. This time, when Uncle Li heard that Lin's father needed to repair his thatched hut, he sent Li Dashu with a donkey cart loaded with thatch to help.
Li Xiaocao also came along. As soon as she saw Lin Yan, she jumped out of the car and said, "Lin Yan, I'm here to help!"
In fact, Lin Yan had not seen Li Xiaocao since she transmigrated. She originally thought that Li Xiaocao was just a friend of the original girl and did not know how to get along with her. But when she saw the energetic Xiaocao today, she knew that she could become good friends with her.
"Thank you, little grass!"
"Don't be so polite with me, are you alright?" Li Xiaocao had heard about Lin Yan's situation yesterday and had been worried about her ever since.
"It's alright! My family is doing just fine now!"
"But I heard that a thug came to collect a debt from you that day!"
"Well... actually, it's nothing. He later found someone else to say that his jade pendant has been found and I don't need to pay for it." Lin Yan found an explanation to tell everyone that she didn't need to pay the hundred taels. Anyway, it was fake to begin with, and Fu Bo wouldn't really come looking for her to collect the debt a month later.
"That's great! If Old Madam Lin finds out, she'll regret it to death. She deserves it!" Li Xiaocao said, feeling indignant on Lin Yan's behalf.
After discussing it among themselves, the group divided the work and began to get to work.
Li Dashu was in charge of tying the thatch. The thatch, dried in the village, was golden in color, uniform in size, and resilient. Li Dashu spread the thatch out evenly and systematically, then used split bamboo poles as a frame to tie it together with the thatch. They would be laid on the roof together to replace the old thatch.
Lin's father found a spot with good quality mud, dug out some yellow clay, and used it to repair the cracks in the wall.
Lin's mother, Lin Yan, Lin Yu, and Li Xiaocao were responsible for clearing away the messy weeds around the thatched hut, fetching water from the river to wash the hut, and cleaning the dust and cobwebs inside and out.
As they were working, they noticed two young men walking towards them.
"Hey, Lin Yan, who are those two? Do you know them?" Li Xiaocao noticed them first.
"I don't really know him!" Lin Yan said, a little puzzled.
The two men approached and called out, "Uncle, Aunt!"
Hearing the voice, Lin's father turned around: "Baojin? Baoquan? What are you doing here?"
Dad and Grandpa heard that you were repairing the house today, so they asked us to come and help!
Lin Baojin and Lin Baoquan are the sons of Lin Chao, who accompanied Uncle Lin Si yesterday. Uncle Lin Si is their grandfather.
After returning home yesterday, Uncle Lin talked about this with his two sons. He was furious. He thought that he originally wanted to persuade his father not to divide the family property, but his younger brother and sister-in-law ran away faster than anyone else when they heard that the eldest branch of the Lin family had gotten into trouble.
He severed all ties with Lin the eldest, leaving the entire Lin family of four with nothing. He felt deeply ashamed that he had even advised him to be understanding of his parents.
Today, I heard that Lin's father was collecting thatch in the village, so I guessed that he was going to repair the house and asked my two grandsons to come and help.
Lin's father was deeply moved to know that his fourth uncle was still thinking of him.
With two more men, the work went even faster. Lin Baojin helped Li Shu lay the thatch, and Lin Baoquan helped his father plaster the mud walls. The group worked enthusiastically and made rapid progress.
It was almost noon, and Lin Yan and the others had almost finished cleaning. Lin Yan looked at the sun and thought about lunch.
Their thatched hut didn't have a kitchen; there was a simple stove, but no pots. With so many people, they couldn't possibly feed everyone only grilled fish on wooden sticks!
"Mom, I'll go borrow some pots and pans from nearby! It's far from the village, so let's not make everyone run back for dinner!"
While claiming she was going to borrow it, Lin Yan was actually rummaging through her spatial storage. Nowadays, every family in the village uses their own tableware for the number of people in their household, so who has spare money to buy extra tableware?
Besides the supplies needed for the apocalypse, which she entrusted to other space-type ability users before the final battle, Lin Yan's space still contained a dedicated area for her own belongings.
Inside were some of her belongings from the apocalypse, such as her outdoor barbecue gear, utensils she used for cooking as a foodie, snacks, tents, clothes, etc.
There were also some things she had left behind while scavenging for supplies, books that interested her, beautiful tableware, ornaments, and a lot of jewelry and diamond ornaments that were worthless in the early days of the apocalypse.
In the mid-apocalyptic world, resources are scarce, and everyone is worried about food. The only valuable things are those that can keep people alive. Beautiful things and precious jewelry from before the apocalypse are unwanted. When the safe zone is unstable, even setting up a stall on the street will not attract customers.
Lin Yan, relying on her large space, always collected these little trinkets, actually hoping to wait until the end of the apocalypse.
Lin Yan picked out some simple tableware and took two large iron pots, which were used by the army for cooking when they went on missions.
As for the seasonings and oil, she had kept the seasonings she bought in town in her spatial storage, along with a piece of spare rib she had bought but hadn't cooked yet. After all, she couldn't let the Li family benefit from things she had paid for herself.
She had all the tools, but lacked the ingredients. She first went to a house on the edge of the village and bought some steamed buns. Then she turned around and went up the mountain from the other side to find some raw materials.
