Chapter 564 Keeping a Canary in Captivity (43)
After arranging for his assistant to go to the hospital, Yan Zhen called his father and asked him to use his connections to get a helicopter from X province.
It had only been a little over an hour, and Xiao Yun was still in a daze while sitting in the helicopter.
He was mentally prepared to drive for more than ten hours straight back to Hangzhou, but Yan Zhen just made a few phone calls, and the return trip was taken care of.
For the first time, he gained a concrete understanding of the Yan family's financial resources, material wealth, and network of connections.
More than three hours later, the helicopter landed in Hangzhou.
Yan Zhen, accompanied by bodyguards, went to the hospital with Xiao Yun, where they met Xiao Yun's assistant and younger siblings who were waiting outside the operating room.
Xiao's mother is still undergoing surgery, and her fate is uncertain.
Xiao Yun's younger brother and sister are still in high school. They are probably twins and look very alike.
The younger brother had dyed yellow hair and tucked his shirt into his pants, looking like a spirited young man. The younger sister had her hair tied in a high ponytail, wore high school uniform pants, and had a habitually furrowed brow, making her seem to have a bad temper.
Unlike Xiao Yun's urgency in rushing back from afar, these two showed no sign of urgency.
The younger brother leaned against the corridor outside the operating room, chewing gum and playing mobile games. When he saw Xiao Yun arrive, he only glanced up at him and Yan Zhen before turning his attention back to his phone screen.
Yan Zhen glanced at the screen of his younger sister's iPad and saw that she was doing English practice questions.
"How is Mom?" Xiao Yun asked hurriedly.
The younger brother selectively ignored what he said, while the younger sister said somewhat coldly, "I can't explain it. Go ask the doctor."
Xiao Yun seemed used to their attitude, but Yan Zhen's assistant spoke up: "The doctor said the impact caused internal bleeding. I invited an expert from a hospital under the Yan family to come over. We'll have to wait until the surgery is over to know the specific details."
Xiao Yun was extremely grateful: "Thank you! It's all thanks to you."
The assistant smiled slightly: "It's Miss's idea."
Xiao Yun turned his head to look at Yan Zhen.
Before he could even speak, Yan Zhen said, "Stop with the pleasantries, let's wait for the surgery results."
Xiao Yun nodded.
These few words of conversation caught the attention of Xiao Yun's younger brother. He glanced at Yan Zhen and saw that she seemed to be much older than his older brother. She was dressed exquisitely and elegantly, and looked like a wealthy person.
He seemed to be thinking of something. After finishing a game, he put away his phone, quietly nudged his younger sister who was doing practice problems with his elbow, and gestured for her to look at Yan Zhen.
The younger sister misunderstood and said to Xiao Yun in a cold tone, "Since you're here, let's go back first. We have class tomorrow."
Xiao Yun frowned: "At least wait until Mom's surgery is over before you leave."
What if the surgery fails and the person cannot be saved? The mother wants to see them one last time before she dies. If they leave, wouldn't she miss that opportunity?
"Who knows when the surgery will be over?" the younger sister said impatiently. "Besides, we can't help here, so we might as well go home and sleep. Senior year of high school means we don't get much sleep to begin with..."
"Is your sleep more important than Mom's life?" Xiao Yun had been on edge the whole way, and now seeing his younger siblings becoming increasingly indifferent and acting as if their mother's car accident and surgery were keeping them from sleeping, even his good temper couldn't hold back.
"You didn't go to high school, you don't know how important every minute of your senior year is," the younger sister said unhappily. "If you delay my college entrance exam, will you pay for me to repeat a year?"
Xiao Yun was furious: "If staying a few more hours will delay your college entrance exam, then don't waste your time. You won't get into university with this kind of score."
Upon hearing Xiao Yun say such a thing, the younger sister reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, instantly becoming sharp and aggressive.
"Not taking the college entrance exam? If I don't take the college entrance exam, do I have to be like you, washing dishes and doing odd jobs, having to be subservient to people, wagging my tail like a dog to make a living? You..."
"Hey." Yan Zhen suddenly interrupted her.
She pulled Xiao Yun behind her, facing her sister directly, but addressed her directly to Xiao Yun: "Is this your sister?"
Xiao Yun: "...Yes."
Did you pay for her tuition and living expenses?
"Ah."
"Did you buy the iPad in your hand and the clothes you're wearing?"
"Yes."
Having received a positive answer, Yan Zhen no longer hesitated and slapped his sister across the face.
With a sharp "smack," the younger sister was stunned.
When the younger brother saw his sister being beaten, he rushed over to say something.
Before he could speak, Yan Zhen gave Xiao Yun a push: "Go."
Before Xiao Yun could even process what was happening, his hand moved first, punching his younger brother in the stomach.
The younger brother was beaten until he bent over.
The younger sister finally realized what was happening, covering her face and staring at Yan Zhen in disbelief. Then she let out an even sharper scream, baring her teeth and claws as she lunged at Yan Zhen, yelling, "Who are you! Why are you hitting me!"
Seeing this, the bodyguard quickly stopped her.
The younger sister was no match for the bodyguard and was quickly pinned against the wall with her hands twisted behind her back, unable to move.
Considering that it wouldn't be good to cause a scene at the hospital, Yan Zhen instructed the bodyguards, "Take them outside."
"Yes."
Soon, the bodyguards grabbed Xiao Yun's younger brother and sister, one in each hand, and took them outside, leaving them on the grass.
The two of them fell flat on their backs. After getting up, the younger sister glared angrily at Yan Zhen and Xiao Yun, who came out afterward.
"You dare let this old woman hit me!" The younger sister trembled with rage, but dared not pounce on Yan Zhen again because of the bodyguards. She could only point at Xiao Yun and say, "You just wait! From now on, I'll pretend I don't have a brother like you! You can kneel down and beg me, but I won't say another word to you!"
After she finished speaking, she turned and was about to leave.
Yan Zhen crossed his arms and clicked his tongue, deliberately raising his voice to say to Xiao Yun, "Xiao Yun, is this how you use the money I gave you? To support this ungrateful wretch who shits on your head?"
Xiao Yun immediately understood Yan Zhen's meaning and, putting on an act, said with feigned remorse, "It's my fault. I will never give them a single penny again."
The younger siblings paused in their steps as they left.
Xiao Yun continued, "Since they don't acknowledge me as their older brother, I'll just pretend I don't have any younger siblings. They'll have to figure out their own tuition and living expenses from now on."
“That’s how it should be.” Yan Zhen echoed him, “You’re seventeen by the time you’re in your final year of high school. At that age, you can go out and work as a dishwasher, have to put up with people’s attitudes, and wag your tail like a dog to make a living. You might be able to support yourself.”
The backs of the younger siblings visibly froze.
“Let’s go back to the operating room and wait,” Yan Zhen said. “If the post-operative condition allows, we’ll transfer Auntie to one of our hospitals. There are professional caregivers there. Once she’s healed and discharged, she can come and live with you at your new home. You won’t have to deal with those unreasonable and weird relatives anymore, saving you from spending all your money on food, drink, and lodging, and then having them yell at you.”
Xiao Yun agreed, "Okay, I'll do whatever you say."
