Chapter 367 The Bride of the Sea God (26)
Chapter 367 The Bride of the Sea God (26)
Nolan narrowed his eyes: "Why?"
"Asya... he's already pitiful enough. He's unhappy in the human world, so let's not make things worse for him. Let him go, okay?"
Nolan paused slightly: "How do you know he's unhappy?"
Yan Zhen smiled bitterly: "Mermaids are captured and brought ashore as food, industrial raw materials, or even pets and toys. They are like meat on a chopping board, at the mercy of others. How could they possibly be happy under such circumstances?"
"You see, even if I don't restrict you normally, you still experience a lot of discomfort on land. You don't want to wear clothes, and your scales dry out and crack if you don't go into the water for a long time... You don't belong on land to begin with; it's our selfishness that forced you to come here."
"You really think so?" Nolan's expression grew slightly agitated. "Can you understand the difficulties faced by the merfolk?"
Yan Zhen nodded: "I've been to the research institute many times and seen a lot... It's cruel."
"So you don't approve of humans hunting and killing merfolk, right?"
Yan Zhen sighed: "So what if they are? I don't know how to stop them, and besides..."
Yan Zhen hesitated, as if he wanted to say something but then stopped.
"And what?" Nolan pressed.
“Mermaids are intelligent beings, and I always feel that if we continue to hunt and kill this species indiscriminately, humanity will eventually suffer the consequences.”
Nolan's expression froze.
For a fleeting moment, he had a strange premonition, as if Si Xia had seen through his thoughts and the merfolk's revenge plan.
He kept his eyes fixed on Yan Zhen, not missing a single change in her expression.
But her expression showed nothing but helplessness, pity, and sorrow.
Nolan then realized he was overthinking things.
She felt compassion for the merfolk—this thought gave Nolan courage.
He grabbed Yan Zhen's hand and squeezed it tightly: "Xiaxia, there's something I need to tell you."
Yan Zhen's fingers curled up unconsciously. After so much anticipation, she had finally waited for this moment.
She said calmly, "What?"
Looking into her clear eyes, Nolan felt like a crazy gambler, betting his entire fortune on an almost impossible outcome.
“My rank is not B, I am… S-rank.”
Yan Zhen looked surprised: "S-rank? The legendary S-rank?"
Nolan nodded slightly.
Once you start talking about something, it's not difficult to continue.
Nolan recounted in detail how he deliberately fell into the fishing net of a deep-sea fishing vessel, came to the human world, passed the level check, and was then secretly manipulated by his contact to lead Si Lan to see him, and finally gave him to her as a birthday present.
"In the past hundred years, only one S-class merfolk has been born: me. I was given high hopes from birth. The chieftain personally raised me and taught me many skills, all so that I could carry the ancient virus buried under the Arctic glacier ashore, spread it to the human world, cause a virus outbreak, severely damage and retaliate against humans, and buy the merfolk a chance to breathe."
Nolan stared intently at Yan Zhen as he said this: "My coming to your side is not accidental, it has been planned for a long time."
After hearing this, Yan Zhen was completely stunned.
"Xiaxia, are you listening?" Nolan grabbed her arm and shook it. "Xiaxia?"
Yan Zhen then pretended to have just come to her senses, leaned back slightly, and looked him up and down from a distance.
Nolan: "..."
His eyes darkened slightly, unsure of what her reaction meant.
After a long while, Yan Zhen reached out and gently poked his cheek with her finger: "S-rank... You're actually S-rank!"
Nolan: "..."
Yan Zhen, as if he had discovered the hidden function of a toy, grabbed Nolan and looked at him over and over, sometimes touching his ears, sometimes pinching his fingers.
While watching, she muttered to herself, "Aside from being prettier, S-class mermaids don't look much different from AB-class ones..."
Upon hearing this, Nolan immediately straightened his back, reached out and clenched his fist, and pale blue scales immediately appeared on his arm.
"No way! I'm incredibly powerful. Every single scale on my body is a sharp killing weapon, harder than diamonds in your human world, and can withstand the water pressure at a depth of 10,000 meters."
"My tail fin can knock a 20,000-pound orca flying!"
"The sound waves I emit can travel two thousand miles away, command all the marine animals in this area, and even interfere with human ultrasonic instruments... In short, I am very powerful!"
Yan Zhen looked doubtful: "Really?"
Nolan nodded vigorously, his eyes resolute.
"I do not believe."
Nolan: "..."
He quickly realized that this was not the time to focus on such things.
He had told her such an important secret, and as the target of his revenge, she was only concerned with his rank?
And yet, she had led me astray as well.
Nolan was about to remind her of the important matter when Yan Zhen leaned in mysteriously and whispered, "The research institute captured an S-class mermaid decades ago. When that mermaid escaped, it almost blew up the lab. Do you have that ability?"
Nolan: "..."
He was silent for a moment, then suddenly reached out and pulled Yan Zhen into his arms, covering her ears.
Yan Zhen was completely bewildered when suddenly a loud bang came from behind him—the fish tank where Nolan usually slept had exploded.
The fish tank shattered into pieces, and seawater surged out, making the living room look like it had been hit by a mini tsunami. All the furniture was scattered and broken.
Yan Zhen, startled: "..."
She pulled away from Nolan's embrace, lifted her trouser legs which were soaking wet, and sighed after a long while: "There's no need to prove myself this way."
An hour later, Yan Zhen hired a housekeeping company to clean up the mess.
One of the workers picked up a 15-centimeter-thick shard of glass from the ground and exclaimed in shock, "Even reinforced glass this thick can spontaneously shatter? Is there any safe glass left on the market?"
Yan Zhen: "...Ahahaha."
She avoided the staff and went to the backyard. Nolan squatted in front of the chicken coop and scattered millet to feed the chickens.
He didn't turn around when he heard her footsteps approaching.
Yan Zhen squatted down next to him, took a handful of millet from his hand, and fed the chicks with him.
After a long silence, Nolan spoke first: "Aren't you afraid?"
"A little," Yan Zhen said truthfully.
Nolan paused, turned to look at her: "Then why don't you notify the research institute to arrest me?"
“You can even fool the most advanced equipment in the research institute, no one can catch you,” Yan Zhen said. “Calling them over will only kill them, and besides, I don’t want to hurt you.”
Nolan was taken aback: "Why?"
“I think you’re right,” Yan Zhen said. “Put yourself in their shoes. If I were a mermaid and humans were using their geographical advantage to slaughter and kill me like this, I would probably retaliate in a more insane way.”
Nolan crushed the millet grains between his fingers: "So you support my revenge?"
Yan Zhen shook his head.
Nolan then asked, "Or are you trying to persuade me to give up revenge and forgive humanity?"
