Chapter 1801: The Actual Reason (Part 1)
The Gamma Division was the true government that ruled the entire Citadel. Politicians, owners of major businesses, and corporations were all under the control of the Gamma Division.
That said, the Gamma Division did not interfere in the affairs of ordinary people unless necessary. They were not rulers or a bunch of dictators. They were the worker ants destined to serve their half-dead, half-alive queen and watch, time and again, as most of their home was destroyed by the World Wipe.
If one disregards their knowledge, power, and longevity, every member of the Gamma Division had a difficult fate. However, each of them made this choice personally and dedicated their lives to humanity.
While the Phantoms fought and tried to grow stronger, the Gamma Division worked to maintain order and prepared for the next World Wipe, after which they would have to start most of their work from scratch.
Only the most influential people in the world knew who the Gamma Division was, but to them, it served as a secret government. None of the ordinary people were supposed to know about the World Wipe or the reasons why the Gamma Division existed.
But the Gamma Division worked not only with ordinary people, but with the Phantoms as well. They knew more about the Dead Lands than anyone else, and some of them possessed information that not even Adam had.
"You know, when I reached the K4-Level, I thought nothing could surprise me anymore, but now I see that a Touched Human knows more than I do," Adam said, looking at the girl who had stood in front of the entrance, waiting for them.
Sano shrugged.
"That’s their job. Though, I have to say that not all Gamma Division members know about the Void Transit."
"Hmm?" Adam raised an eyebrow, confused. "Is it that secret of a place?"
"Kind of. It’s not that it’s a secret that needs to be kept, but rather that the Void Transit, while a very effective way to travel long distances, is also extremely dangerous."
Natta turned to Adam. "That’s exactly why you’re only finding out about this now, Adam. In that regard, the Void Transit is similar to the Spires and the teleports. Even if you’d been told about the teleports at the K2-Level, it would have been too dangerous for you to use them."
Adam’s gaze grew deeper.
"I see. So it’s not just about the distance, but also the pressure this method puts on you."
"That’s right. Up until now, you were too weak. In fact, Sano and I wouldn’t have risked using the Void Transit even with Xyrea’s armor. Our bodies wouldn’t have withstood it, but given your power level, this is the best way for you to get to the Deep Ring."
Sano cut the engine.
"Alright, let’s not keep her waiting. The officers of the Gamma Division aren’t the kind of people you want to cross."
’Officers? Does the Gamma Division have ranks?’ Adam wondered.
He knew that not all members of the Gamma Division were equal. It made sense. Especially considering that their strength was directly tied to their age.
Someone like Douglas was significantly stronger than most of the Gamma Division. He had subordinates just like in a regular army.
Click.
The car doors opened as the four of them approached the girl. She looked no older than 20, with light hair that didn’t reach her chin and calm blue eyes.
"Sano, Natta, you’re late." The girl’s cold voice rang out as she looked at them.
Strangely enough, Sano and Natta simply lowered their heads.
"Sorry, we got held up. It took Adam a while to-"
"I don’t want to hear excuses. Just shut up."
Adam and Silvana exchanged glances. This was clearly not the start they had expected.
Then, the girl turned to Adam. Her gaze softened toward him.
"My name is Farla. I’m one of the Gamma Division officers. Though I think you already know that."
Adam nodded.
"Yeah, but what exactly does that mean?"
In response, Farla pointed at Natta and Sano.
"That I’m stronger than those two. That I know secrets you’re not yet aware of. That sometimes I have to make tough decisions, and that I’ve seen the Citadel reduced to nothing but the First Ring at least a few times and helped restore it to its former glory."
In an instant, Adam’s expression grew serious. He hadn’t expected the girl standing before him to possess such authority.
Moreover, it also meant that Farla was at least 500–750 years old. Considering the power progression of the Touched Humans, this was proof of her strength.
Adam looked around. The streets in this area were empty.
"I see. But what about me?" Adam narrowed his eyes. "Are you really saying that you, as a Touched Human, are capable of defeating a K4-Phantom who has almost reached the barrier?"
Farla glanced at Adam before shaking her head.
"It’s impossible for me. You’ll find a way to win no matter how hard I try. Either way, we’re not here to figure out who’s stronger. I’m doing my job, and that’s it."
Step.
Farla turned, heading toward the door.
"Follow me. First, we need to get to the Void Transit."
"Huh? Isn’t it right here?" Adam scratched his cheek.
Crack.
The doors opened, and they found themselves in a simple hall with nothing but lighting and a few tables with old chairs.
However, none of that mattered, as there was something unusual right in the center of the hall.
The round rift was open, emitting a purple light. Several fragments hovered above the surface, occasionally trembling as energy pulses resembling lightning flashed between them.
"Is this the Void Transit?" Adam tilted his head, disappointment visible in his gaze.
Farla shook her head.
"No. This is just one of the entrances." She looked at Sano and Natta. "Go on, show him."
They nodded and cautiously stepped forward, causing the fragments to tremble.
The next moment, a bright energy pulse burst forth as Sano and Natta vanished in two flashes that headed downward toward the actual Void Transit.
