Chapter 499 [Empire] Dawn's Flame
After standing all night, the wind still bit hard, its chill piercing my face, as if this frozen planet had never known warmth. My eyelids felt heavy, almost overcome by exhaustion, yet I forced myself to stay awake. Every moment dragged on like an eternity, and the standing position began to numb my legs and feet, making my body feel like it was no longer my own. But no matter what, the command still hadn't arrived. The hollow voice on the wind seemed to tell us: everything is still waiting.
There was still no movement in front of the church, and the air around us remained unchanged. Only the occasional muffled thud from the distant battlefield reminded us that the war continued. Yet, it all seemed so far away. A cold wind blew, bringing gusts of chill, penetrating the fabric of my winter clothing and striking my skin. My hands were frozen, and the fingers gripping my weapon had become stiff, as if every minute was a battle against fatigue and cold.
I occasionally glanced around. My teammates were equally silent. Everyone stood silently, their faces expressionless, their eyes blank. Their gazes were fixed on the distance, perhaps watching the flickering explosions, or perhaps staring at the soldiers not far away, trying to deduce some information from their movements. However, that information never came.
There were no orders, no changes, time seemed frozen in this moment. The army's movements continued unabated, the Zerg's attack continued unabated, but we simply stood there, silent, like part of the background, as if waiting for a moment destined to be unreachable.
The air was so cold it made us want to move, but no one dared. In silence, everyone seemed to endure this unspoken oppression, each moment slowly chipping away at our patience and strength. Only the distant explosions and the relentless icy wind reminded us that the real battle was still taking place somewhere far away, and we, still here, watched over that icy door.
Whether it was the morning glow or the gradually spreading smoke and dust from the distant battlefield, the light from the artillery battle seemed to have dimmed. The originally glaring light, filtered through this hazy gray fog, became even more blurred, as if masking the brutality of the war, and adding a sense of uneasy silence to the battlefield.
The morning glow quietly spread across the horizon, a faint orange-yellow hue gradually seeping from the very edge of the horizon, illuminating the cold earth. The light was faint, yet gently touched the distant buildings, bringing a touch of unreal warmth, as if reminding us that the sun would still rise. But this light was short-lived, slowly swallowed up by the smoke of war, becoming increasingly blurred.
The distant artillery fire continued to roar, the air vibrating, as if every explosion reminded them of the planet's coldness and desolation. Meanwhile, the nearby lights were no longer as dazzling, gradually swallowed by the surrounding haze, as if suddenly losing power, gradually becoming a dim red flame, flickering, as if obscured by an invisible mist.
I stared at that faint ray of light, feeling this distant battle suddenly seem even more distant. Though it wasn't yet dawn, the uneasy silence made it impossible to ignore its eerie calm. The air around me began to grow thinner, and everyone's breath was drawn out by the silence.
"What the hell is going on?" I thought to myself, looking at the explosion lights in the distance. But for some reason, they seemed less dazzling, even a little tired. This irrational change made me involuntarily tense.
