Chapter 681 - 681: Darkrai vs. Landorus
Chapter 681 - 681: Darkrai vs. Landorus
Latios used Recover, and the wounds on its body began to heal under a soft glow.Gary watched without any surprise.
"So you know that move too. Darkrai, use Nasty Plot."
"Dak."
Darkrai's eyes narrowed. Dark energy surged around it, stimulating its mind and sharply raising its special attack.
With Double Team still active, Gary was not worried about Latios landing a clean hit. Among Latios's possible moves, the only ones that could easily clear the clones were Psychic-type techniques, but Darkrai was completely immune to Psychic attacks.
In other words, Darkrai could safely set up in front of Latios.
Tobias clearly understood that too.
"Latios, Draco Meteor!"
"Woo!"
Latios raised its head and fired a red sphere of dragon energy into the sky.
Bang!
The energy sphere exploded high above the field, scattering into countless meteors that rained down over the battlefield.
Darkrai's clones were destroyed one after another. The real Darkrai also had to keep moving to avoid being struck.
That movement exposed its position.
"The one dodging is the real one," Tobias said immediately. "Latios, Giga Impact!"
"Woo!"
Latios folded its arms and charged straight toward Darkrai at full speed. A thick cyclone of energy wrapped around its body, and the air cracked with the sound of a sonic boom.
The crowd supporting Gary became tense.
If Darkrai took that head-on, it would be badly hurt.
Latios was almost on top of Darkrai when Gary finally spoke.
"Protect."
"Dak."
A green barrier appeared in front of Darkrai.
Latios slammed into it with Giga Impact.
Bang!
The barrier shook violently, but it held.
Tobias's expression changed.
He had not expected Gary's Darkrai to even know Protect. Its moveset was far more complete than he had assumed.
In an ordinary battle, Giga Impact would not cause a full recharge penalty if it failed to properly hit the target, but being blocked at such close range still created a brief opening.
Gary did not miss it.
"Dark Pulse."
Darkrai raised its arm and fired a condensed wave of dark energy.
The attack hit Latios at close range and sent it crashing down.
Boom!
A cloud of black smoke rose from the ground.
The entire stadium stared at the impact point.
"Is it over?"
"Did Latios lose?"
"It should be down…"
As the smoke cleared, Latios was revealed lying on the ground, completely unconscious.
The referee raised his flag.
"Latios is unable to battle! Darkrai wins!"
"Latios has been defeated!" the commentator shouted. "Tobias now has only three Pokémon remaining, while Gary has not lost a single Pokémon!"
The atmosphere in the stadium shifted.
Before the match, many people had thought Gary and Tobias would be evenly matched. Both had crushed their opponents in the earlier rounds, and Tobias had shown one Legendary after another. But now that they were actually facing each other, Gary was clearly controlling the pace.
In the stands, the gamblers who had bet on Gary winning perfectly were practically shouting themselves hoarse.
"Dad Gary, just hold on a little longer! Only three left!"
"Play steady! Don't lose a single Pokémon!"
"Tobias isn't even Gary's rival!"
"Gary is too strong. He hasn't even used his old main team yet. If he brought those out, wouldn't he sweep six at once?"
At this point, the balance of victory had clearly tilted toward Gary.
On the field, Tobias looked at Gary for a moment.
"This League Conference really is full of hidden talent," he said. "I didn't expect to meet a Trainer like you here. With your strength, this kind of competition shouldn't interest you much."
Gary smiled faintly.
"What about you? With your strength, you don't need to enter this kind of tournament either."
Tobias did not answer.
Gary found Tobias strange. If he had entered the League Conference to qualify for the World Championships, Gary could understand it. But in the original timeline, Tobias had appeared once, swept through the Conference, and then vanished completely. He never showed up in any major public tournament again.
He was like a bug in the system.
Tobias ended the conversation there and threw another Poké Ball.
"Landorus."
A flash of light appeared, and a Pokémon with its lower body wrapped in a white cloud floated into the air.
[Lv. 69 Landorus / Quasi-Legendary]
"Landorus?" Gary was slightly surprised.
He had expected Entei.
Since Tobias had already revealed Suicune and Raikou, it would have made sense for his last Legendary beast to be Entei. Instead, he had sent out Landorus.
Although Landorus was not a Mythical Pokémon, its base strength was comparable to that class. Among lower-tier Legendary Pokémon, it was still extremely powerful.
This also confirmed something for Gary. Tobias's Pokémon were strong, but their levels were all below 70. Compared to true Elite Four-level teams, they were still a little short. Given a few more years, though, Tobias would definitely reach that level.
"Darkrai, Double Team. Surround Landorus."
"Dak."
Darkrai split into dozens of copies again, spreading through the air and surrounding Landorus from every direction.
Gary studied Landorus carefully.
This was its Incarnate Form. Landorus's real strength was usually displayed in its Therian Form, but to change forms, it needed the Reveal Glass. Without it, Landorus could not transform on its own.
"Landorus, Stone Edge!" Tobias ordered.
Landorus waved its arms, and sharp stone blades formed around it before shooting outward in every direction.
The rock blades pierced through the Darkrai clones one by one, causing them to vanish. Even the real Darkrai was struck, though the hit did not knock it back much.
"Ice Beam," Gary ordered at once.
Darkrai gathered ice energy between its hands and fired a cold beam toward Landorus.
Landorus quickly moved aside, avoiding the attack. It knew how dangerous that move was.
Darkrai immediately chased.
In terms of speed, Landorus could not keep up with Darkrai.
Another Ice Beam shot out.
Landorus did not dare take it directly, so it used Stone Edge to block. The two attacks collided and canceled each other out.
The fight continued in midair.
Ice Beam.
Stone Edge.
Dodge.
Counter.
The two Pokémon exchanged several rounds of attacks above the battlefield. Landorus kept trying to create openings with Stone Edge, while Darkrai used its superior speed to maintain pressure.
On the seventh Ice Beam, Darkrai suddenly adjusted the angle of the attack.
This time, the two moves crossed each other instead of canceling out.
Ice Beam struck Landorus's right arm.
At the same time, Stone Edge hit Darkrai's left arm.
"Ah!"
Landorus cried out in pain as its right arm froze over instantly.
Because Landorus was both Ground- and Flying-type, Ice-type attacks were especially dangerous to it. Even a glancing hit dealt serious damage.
"Landorus has been hit by Ice Beam!" the commentator shouted. "That looked like it hurt badly!"
