Chapter 680 - 680: Gary’s Darkrai
Chapter 680 - 680: Gary’s Darkrai
"Gary has recalled Magnezone," the commentator said, watching the field closely. "What Pokémon will he send out to deal with Raikou?"The audience immediately became restless.
Magnezone had already taken down Heatran, but it was badly damaged after Raikou's Extreme Speed. Now everyone wanted to know whether Gary would finally send out one of his Legendary Pokémon.
Gary reached for his next Poké Ball.
It was an Ultra Ball.
Up in the stands, Brock noticed it at once.
"That's an Ultra Ball."
Barry looked at him. "What's wrong with an Ultra Ball?"
Ash answered before Brock could.
"Gary usually uses Ultra Balls for Legendary Pokémon."
"What?!"
Barry and Dawn were both shocked.
On the field, Gary had already thrown the ball.
A burst of white light appeared, and a black, shadow-like Pokémon emerged.
[Lv. 70 Darkrai / Quasi-Legendary]
The entire stadium exploded with noise.
"What?! Darkrai!"
"Gary has a Darkrai too?!"
"No way! This is getting ridiculous!"
"I didn't expect this at all!"
No one had imagined that two Darkrai would appear in the same League Conference.
Gary's older fans knew he had Latios. Some knew about Zapdos and Heatran too. But Darkrai was something he had never revealed before, so even they were stunned.
Across the field, Tobias frowned.
He had not expected Gary to still be hiding another Legendary Pokémon. Including the Heatran Gary had used earlier, this was already the second Legendary Gary had shown in this Conference.
"Darkrai, Dark Pulse," Gary ordered.
"Thunderbolt," Tobias responded at almost the same time.
Darkrai raised one arm, gathering dark energy before sending a black wave toward Raikou.
Raikou's body crackled with electricity. The lightning around it condensed into the shape of a thunder beast and rushed forward, colliding with Dark Pulse.
Boom!
The two attacks exploded in midair.
Neither side had gained an advantage.
Tobias glanced at the rain clouds above the battlefield and felt a little more confident. The weather had been set up by Gary's Magnezone, but now it was helping Raikou instead. If Electric Terrain were still fully active as well, Raikou would have had an even greater advantage.
Before the rain disappeared, Tobias gave another order.
"Raikou, use Thunder!"
"Ao!"
Electricity surged violently around Raikou. It raised its head, sending lightning into the rain clouds above.
Gary did not rush to command Darkrai. He waited until the Thunder had already been called down from the sky.
Only then did he speak.
"Dark Void."
"Dak."
Darkrai formed a black sphere and threw it toward Raikou.
At the same time, a bolt of Thunder crashed down from the clouds and struck Darkrai directly.
Boom!
Darkrai endured the hit. Electricity tore across its body, but Gary did not look concerned. Thunder was powerful, but against Darkrai, it was not enough to decide the match.
On the other side, Dark Void landed cleanly on Raikou.
Raikou's eyes closed almost immediately, and its body slumped into a sleeping state.
"No! Raikou was hit by Dark Void!"
"Hahaha! Tobias finally gets to taste his own medicine!"
"Serves him right! Now he knows how everyone else felt!"
Many of the Trainers and spectators who had watched Tobias sweep opponents with Darkrai earlier suddenly felt very satisfied. Seeing Tobias's own Pokémon fall asleep from Dark Void was strangely refreshing.
"Dream Eater," Gary ordered.
But Tobias reacted before Darkrai could complete the move.
"Raikou, return."
A red beam shot out from Raikou's Poké Ball and recalled it instantly.
Darkrai's Dream Eater lost its target and was forced to stop.
The audience immediately started complaining.
"Come on, have some spirit!"
"He recalled it right before Dream Eater? That's disgusting."
"He's just delaying now."
"It looks like Tobias doesn't have anything that can properly deal with Gary's Darkrai."
"He's going to lose anyway. The question is whether Gary can win without losing a Pokémon."
"You can accept losing one, right?"
"Shut up. You can tell you didn't bet on Gary's perfect win!"
Most of the loudest complaints came from the gamblers. Those who had placed bets on Gary winning flawlessly were more nervous than anyone.
Tobias ignored the noise and sent out his next Pokémon.
"Latios."
The blue Legendary dragon appeared in the air again.
Gary understood Tobias's choice immediately.
Latios could use Safeguard. Tobias had sent it out because he wanted to block Dark Void.
But Gary did not plan to give it time.
"Dark Pulse."
Darkrai released another wave of dark energy.
Tobias countered quickly.
"Dragon Pulse!"
Latios fired a dragon-shaped wave of energy toward Darkrai.
The two attacks met in the air, but the clash did not last long. Dark Pulse tore through the Dragon Pulse, splitting the dragon-shaped wave apart before continuing forward.
It struck Latios directly.
"Woo!"
Latios cried out in pain.
Dark-type moves were super effective against Latios. The damage was clear.
"Double Team," Gary continued. "Surround Latios, then use Dark Pulse."
Darkrai flew upward, and its body split into copies. In only a moment, dozens of Darkrai appeared around Latios, surrounding it from every direction.
Tobias's expression became more serious.
Normally, Latios could use Psychic or Confusion to clear away clones. But Darkrai was a Dark-type. Psychic-type moves were useless against it.
If Latios wasted time trying to attack the wrong targets, the real Darkrai would land another Dark Pulse.
The previous exchange had already proven that Latios could not win a direct clash of moves. Darkrai's level was higher, and if Latios took a full-powered Dark Pulse without protection, the result would be ugly.
"Latios, Light Screen!" Tobias ordered.
Latios immediately formed a wall of light around itself.
At the same time, the many Darkrai around it all launched Dark Pulse.
Boom!
Most of the attacks were illusions.
Only one was real.
But that one real Dark Pulse struck Latios through the Light Screen. The barrier reduced part of the damage, but it could not erase the type disadvantage. Latios still took a solid hit.
Gary watched Tobias with some confusion.
"You're not using Safeguard?"
In Gary's view, Tobias had sent Latios out specifically to prevent Dark Void. That was why Gary had chosen to attack directly instead of using sleep tactics. But Tobias had tried to fight first instead.
Finally, Tobias gave the order.
"Latios, use Safeguard."
A white light spread around Latios, protecting it from status conditions.
The reason Tobias had delayed using it was simple. He wanted to see whether Latios could compete directly with Gary's Darkrai.
Now he had his answer.
It could not.
Gary naturally would not let the setup go unpunished.
"Dark Pulse."
"Dak!"
While Latios was using Safeguard, Darkrai fired another Dark Pulse.
Latios accelerated, trying to dodge, but it had underestimated Darkrai's accuracy and speed. The attack swept across its side and hit.
Fortunately, Light Screen was still active and absorbed much of the damage. Otherwise, Latios might have gone down then and there.
"Recover," Tobias ordered.
Latios's body glowed with healing light, and the injuries on its body began to mend.
